new work estimates that 51.4% to 53.6% of transmission comes from those not showing symptoms; 48%-47% of this comes from people in the presymptomatic stage, while 3.4%-6.6% comes from those who will never develop symptoms. The range of these findings is based on two separate studies by others, one which found that 18% of all COVID-19 infections were without symptoms, while the other pegged this number at 31%.

The new model estimates that even if all cases of people with symptoms are immediately isolated, the disease will continue to spread stealthily via symptomless infections. This means that many people are silently transmitting the virus and driving the pandemic’s spread—either because they do not yet know they are ill, or because they are asymptomatic carriers who are infectious but never develop symptoms.

To drive the virus’ attack rate below 1% and quell the epidemic, the model estimates that between 33% to 42% of asymptomatic cases would need to be detected and isolated—in addition to detecting and isolating the majority of the symptom-based cases. For this to happen, a robust test-and-trace campaign is needed for society to safely resume its normal, pre-pandemic level of economic and social activity.

More than 10 percent of confirmed cases in Arizona, Washington and Tennessee are among those under the age of 20, an analysis by Bloomberg found.

And these are people being tested at a lower rate.

In New Mexico, 44 percent of those who are testing positive for the virus are under 30 years old, according to state health data. In Illinois, there are more infections among people aged 20-29 than among any other age group. In California, those in their 20s make up the largest cohort of cases, followed closely by people in their 30s.

Testing results are available on average after 3 days in the US.  In some cases more than a week.  One epidemiologist said that if the results are available within 48 hours, that it's pretty useless, as it's too long a timeframe to effectively contact trace.

In China, by late March/early April test results were available in Shanghai within 3-5 hours.  In some parts of China results weren't available until the next day.  China preferred a quick test, that has more false results, but gets you results quickly.  Figuring people could be retested easily enough.

Air travel has largely shut down, and many of the new clusters are in nursing homes, jails and prisons, and factories tied to essential industries. Containing the outbreak was no longer a question of social responsibility, but of personal responsibility. From the White House podium, Surgeon General Jerome Adams told “communities of color” that “we need you to step up and help stop the spread.”

Public-health restrictions designed to contain the outbreak were deemed absurd. They seemed, in Carlson’s words, “mindless and authoritarian,” a “weird kind of arbitrary fascism.” To restrict the freedom of white Americans, just because nonwhite Americans are dying, is an egregious violation of the racial contract. The wealthy luminaries of conservative media have sought to couch their opposition to restrictions as advocacy on behalf of workers, but polling shows that those most vulnerable to both the disease and economic catastrophe want the outbreak contained before they return to work.

Fair question...

Is every white senior citizen stupid or do they hear in all this talk of war and sacrifice that they’re considered collateral damage and acceptable losses?

Acceptable losses?

Speaking as a white senior, we are the preferred losses. Losing one of us white seniors who (at 66-70+) may have another 15-18 years of social security benefits and subsidized health care benefits through Medicare. If covid-19 kills enough of us, the Repubs don't have to worry about funding SS/MC payments and can go back to looting the treasury.

Motherfuckers want us dead.

Would have when he was president. Now? Not as much as Trump or Obama. President Clinton already eulogized Lewis.
