"The best available evidence indicates that COVID-19 poses relatively low risks to school-aged children," the guidelines read.

I will ask you the same question I asked Kid.

How many school children are you prepared to sacrifice on the altar of reopening schools?

How many teachers and staff are you prepared to sacrifice?
LOL!
None are in danger with proper safeguards.
Are you even paying attention?

Another repost:
Quote
On July 16, the state had a total of 23,170 children ages 17 and under who had tested positive since the beginning of the pandemic, according to the Florida Department of Health. By July 24, that number jumped to 31,150.
That's a 34% increase in new cases among children in eight days.

And more children in Florida are requiring hospitalization. As of July 16, 246 children had been hospitalized with coronavirus. By July 24, that number had jumped to 303.

And?

There can't and won't be sufficient proper safeguards, Ward. You cannot run an elementary school the way you do an office or a factory.
Actually it is easy to do.
Quote
And the teacher to student ratio is not small enough to even begin to provide the logistical support to make something close to adequate happen.
Quite the contrary.
Quote

If it isn't in the class, it's on the bus to and from or the walk to and from.

There is no danger on the bus.
Quote

"And?" asks the asinine one.
Which left you answerless.

Turns out, you have never set foot in an elementary school as an adult. Nor been on a school bus.

That makes a lot of sense.
LOL!

Schools closures in spring were linked to reductions in Covid-19 cases and deaths, study says

"Let's go!"

Indeed.

However, the researchers note their findings can not necessarily apply to current debates around reopening schools since the conditions in the spring -- when fewer people may have been wearing masks and social distancing -- differ from now.

For instance, "it is unclear how COVID-19 spread would be affected if schools remained open while states enacted other policies to restrict movement," the researchers wrote in the study. "It is possible school-related spread may be mitigated with infection-control interventions recommended by the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics, including frequent handwashing, universal mask policies, physical distancing measures, and increased sanitation procedures."

Key word: possible.

You're prepared to bet the lives of the children and teachers, as well as their families, that it will be happen, even as the president has decided it is too dangerous to hold a substantial convention and too dangerous to vote.

That makes sooooooo much sense.

I will ask you, again: how many children's deaths is this worth to you, Kid? How many teacher's deaths is this worth to you?!

Because that's the gamble you are asking them to make on your behalf - that the growth in economy is worth a certain number of deaths, but not more than that number.

More Key words:  universal mask policies

Same folks who want their kids in school are the same ones protesting against having them wear masks.

Kids are more at risk by NOT going to school.

Didn't you read the post where many kids are getting better sleep and thriving away from the social pressures and bullying?

Kids are more at risk BY going to school.  And so are the teachers, administrators, security guards, maintenance workers and parents.

Kamala Harris would be an excellent replacement for Thomas or Alito on the Supreme Court, as would Maya Wiley.

The misadministration has abdicated.

The dislocation from the manufactured catastrophe Mitch and Don just crapped on the economy because they are equally scared of Nancy Pelosi, decency, and good sense will speed and spread the dying.

Every day means a little more carnage from the cannibal cult of trump once known as the republican party.

It’s now an institution entirely restricting itself to shameful acts. It needs to be dissolved immediately, it’s ringleaders rounded up, dispossessed, and closely held till their trials.

The republican party has metastasized into republicancer.

First Lady must look nice at all times.
A space ship just left for Mars, that did not cost $10.

You’ve confused First Lady and queen, just as I was considering penning a petition requesting that you be let out from under the table. It’s a shame, but now I’ll have to give it more thought in light of this last projected misapprehension.

If it isn’t actually working to address the pandemic in America, a misadministration has time on its blood soaked hands to plot the theft of funds allocated by Congress to fight Covid and save lives through a compromised industry willing to help the crime spree relaunch financially and politically.

While life and death are on the line, trump-Versailles focuses entirely on graft.

http://www.vox.com/2020/7/31/21334190/what-police-do-defund-abolish-police-reform-training

Quite a long read, but very worthwhile.

The last paragraph

“The reason I think we need to rethink policing is because I care about police,” says Rizer, the former officer and R Street researcher. “I want to make policing prestigious again — not the prestige of power, but the prestige of respect. But in order to do that, we need to stop underfunding everything else and leaving the police holding a bag of shit.”

Japan Acted Like the Virus Had Gone. Now It’s Spread Everywhere.

Japan with a somewhat similar trajectory as Israel.
Had things under control but reopened too much too quickly.
Though in Israel schools were a significant part of the 2nd wave transmission.
In Japan in was mostly due to bars and nightclubs.
Unlike other Asian countries, Japan didn't swoop in and quarantine and contact trace effectively.

I keep saying that you need to reopen gradually, step by step.  And need to have testing and contact tracing in place when mini-outbreaks occur.  Of course in the US, testing result delays make contact tracing nearly impossible.    6-8 days to find out your positive is a failure.

Back on May 4th, Banks and I posted about the internal Trump admin projections for deaths, which I am pleased to say we have missed by a wide margin, thus far - 200,000 new cases per day, 3,000 deaths per day.

But the IHME's model, as reported by the NYT that day said:
Quote
The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington is now estimating that there will be nearly 135,000 deaths in the United States through the beginning of August — more than double what it forecast on April 17, when it estimated 60,308 deaths by Aug. 4. (The country has already had more than 68,000 deaths.)

The institute wrote that the revisions reflected “rising mobility in most U.S. states as well as the easing of social distancing measures expected in 31 states by May 11, indicating that growing contacts among people will promote transmission of the coronavirus.”

They "only" underestimated by ~20,000 deaths with their then newly doubled fatalities projection.

But the president the day before that "“We’re going to lose anywhere from 75, 80 to 100,000 people.” We hit that 100,000 mark 19 days later.

NA shared the projection below on June 16th. We'd need to have roughly 750 deaths per day over the next two months to get there. As I noted in response to him, their model projected that we would dip, then rise to 1,400 daily fatalities by October 1st.

We're running 1,100 deaths per day (over the last week) at the moment, though that comes after three consecutive days that averaged 1,464. The good news is that if we remain at that 1,100 figure, we'd still be 20,000 above the projection.

The bad news is if we continue at anything like the current rate of increase.... or if all we see is another lull followed by yet another crest in cases and deaths.

And we don't have the foggiest, in truth, if that's going to happen.

Projecting 200,000 deaths by October:

James Murdoch,  the liberal member of the clan,  steps down....

Quote
The elder Murdoch, Rupert, had set his sons against one another in a pitched battle over his succession — the inspiration for the cult hit HBO series, Succession. Lachlan, the older son, is a bit warmer, a bit less cerebral, and, like Rupert a lot more conservative than James. He prevailed. James left Fox Corp. after most of the family's entertainment holdings were sold to the Walt Disney Co.

James holds more liberal views on politics and climate change than either his father or his elder brother, Lachlan, who leads the company. James and his wife Kathryn have given generously to Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and other Democrats. They have also contributed significant sums to environmental initiatives.

For years, James Murdoch has chafed at the more conservative views that find a home in the Journal's opinion pages, the Post and on the shows and news coverage offered by Fox News, also controlled by the Murdochs.

More recently, leading Fox personalities and the Journal editorial pages have been accused of harboring racist rhetoric during widespread public debate over racial justice. They have also been accused of discrediting credible scientific research and public health officials during a public health emergencies. Some of that criticism has emanated from the Journal's own newsroom....
