California is nice if you get it right. As stacked a deck as you’ll find anywhere, but it has some unique amenities that are hard to replicate. Moving from NYC to San Diego was a trade up in every conceivable metric. There isn’t a fire closer than 40 miles at the moment, so we’ve enjoyed the long weekend.
California is a Garden of Eden, a paradise to live in and see. But believe it or not you won't find it so hot if you ain't got the Do Re Mi.

I hate work.
I only ever went to work to get money for food, housing, car.
Unless you're the boss...most of the time all that happens is you get  "used and abused", "bullied and harassed".
No wonder the suicide rate is sky high.
Sorry, but if your mom tells you to clean the basement that is the least you can do.

We estimate that over 250,000 of the reported cases between August 2 and September 2 are due to the Sturgis Rally.  Roughly 19 percent of the national cases during this timeframe.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/09/08/politics/white-supremacy-dhs-draft-assessment/index.html

There are three drafts, so far. I find myself wondering how soon before DHS disowns these drafts and puts out either a new draft or a final which presents a totally different conclusion of what the "most lethal threat" to the US is.

If they stand by this report, I will give the head of DHS (or perhaps underlings or both) brownie points. If the head of DHS gets fired over this, I would not be shocked, though the timing, as with replacing Esper (whose potential replacements are being interviewed atm), would not be good for the campaign (or the country, probably). (Note that this is not an endorsement of the head of DHS, but a comment on the motivations for such a change and an utter disbelief in any replacement that this president would make, especially at this time, given the failures of so many other appointments, thus far.)

White supremacy is 'most lethal threat' to the US, DHS draft assessment says

Quote
White supremacists will remain the most "persistent and lethal threat" in the United States through 2021, according to Department of Homeland Security draft documents.

The most recent draft report predicts an "elevated threat environment at least through" early next year, concluding that some US-based violent extremists have capitalized on increased social and political tensions in 2020.

Although foreign terrorist organizations will continue to call for attacks on the US, the report says, they "probably will remain constrained in their ability to direct such plots over the next year."

The threat assessment -- which also warns of continued disinformation efforts by Russia -- is especially notable as President Donald Trump has often employed race-baiting tactics in his quest for reelection and frequently downplayed the threat from white supremacists during his term in office. The Trump administration has portrayed Antifa and anarchists as a top threat to the US, with the President tweeting this summer that the US will designate Antifa as a terrorist organization.

The recently released draft reports, which were made public by Lawfare Editor in Chief Benjamin Wittes and first reported by Politico, asses a host of threats, including cyber, foreign influence and irregular migration.

All three drafts state that white supremacist extremists are the deadliest threat. However, the placement and language about white supremacy in three versions of the DHS draft documents differ slightly.

But according to Kid's chosen scientist tweet, "the virus is going to do what it does!"

So what if SD has among the biggest spikes in the country this past week?!

Tentative good news:
https://www.cnn.com/2020/09/08/health/pfizer-biontech-vaccine-october-intl-grm/index.html

They think they might be ready to seek approval by mid-October.

The head of Operation Warp Speed disagrees:
Quote
Meanwhile, Moncef Slaoui, the chief adviser to Operation Warp Speed, told NPR last week that it is "extremely unlikely, but not impossible" that a Covid-19 vaccine could be authorized for emergency use by the US Food and Drug Administration before the end of October.

But that they could be that close is exciting, even if they run a month or later than that.

100 million doses will be ready by the end of 2020, 1.3 billion could be by the end of 2021.

33 other potential vaccines around the world are currently in trials.

Meanwhile, the Hartford CT public schools did not open today because of a virus, but it wasn't COVID-19!

https://www.hartfordschools.org/hps-opening-postponed-tuesday-sept-8/

It was a ransomware virus that kept them shut.

Bizarre.

We need to re-imagine how we do policing, but ... to take all policing off is something a latte liberal may go for as they sit around the Hamptons discussing this as an academic problem.

But people living on the ground need proper policing,”

Also never listen to somebody who claims to support the military, but who increases our budget for and reliance on mercenaries.

I talk about denialists. In New Hampshire, the GOP has provided a clear example:

https://www.nhpr.org/post/deerfield-select-board-calls-state-rep-who-posted-racist-statement-resign#stream/0

A NH state rep posted this on his FB account:

His town's Select Board called for him to resign. So, of course, did the House Democratic Party leaders.

"Republican leaders have stopped short of that, calling the comments inexcusable but arguing that Spillane “meant no harm.”"

"Meant no harm" vs. "burn down their houses."

That is denialism.

I am sure that this, too, will bring swift condemnation from President Trump.

What happened is after a day of detention they took her to the border with Ukraine and tried to expel her from Belarus, but she refused to leave the country.  So last I heard there's a standoff at the border.  Pretty brave as her main options are really exile or jail, since she is in custody.
