As Election Day draws closer, commentators are issuing apocalyptic warnings about potential coups, street violence and President Trump not conceding if he loses.

But there's another frightening election scenario I dread as a Black man -- and that few people seem to be talking about.
It's what happens if an armed Black person clashes with an armed White person at a protest and bullets start flying

Same tune he's been singing for months:

The Texas GOP tried to block "straight ticket" voting.

A judge has said they can't.

The GOP oppo to STV seems notably insincere.   Many places I've lived,  it's really more likely to find Republicans who want to vote a straight ticket,  and view "Republican" as an all-embracing brand.    Whereas I've known many Democrats in the Plains who were more independent and more liable to vote for a moderate Republican who happens to be the more competent candidate for a given district or state.  Chuck Hagel as Nebraska senator,  for example.   The GOP feigning of some principled stand on behalf of thorough study of the ballot is pretty transparent.  If they made a genuine argument for that principle,  and ensured all voters had adequate time and hygienic conditions to study the ballot,  I could at least respect that as worthy of public discussion.

The best option,  when someone gets to a choice of,  say,  Public Utility Commission candidates,  and hasn't read their positions,  is probably Leave Blank.

With the right for anyone to parade around in public with military weaponry being allowed in many states, the two scenarios I've been expecting:

- one or two or more armed militia types are going to go to a BLM or other mass rally and undertake a horrific mass killing.  We've had schools and music festivals and movie theaters shot up by angry gun nuts.  A political rally will become a target and it will be very easy now that armed people can just openly carry assault rifles with massive clips.

- and the possibility of a confrontation between two armed and opposed political groups as that writer discusses.  Two armed groups and all it will take is one jerk to pull a trigger.

Things will get ugly.
It's absurdly dangerous and farcical to allow untrained folks to walk around in public with powerful weaponry.  No other country would even contemplate allowing such irresponsible insanity.  it's just a matter of time before it blows up and dozens are dead.

Reason enough to get a carry permit?

Mr Wall may be alive - his step daughter as well - had he been carrying and able to defend himself

Not sure we need more shoot-outs ...

True - and in this case the deceased may have also stayed alive if he had not incited the other man (entire story not really out)

Quote

And of course having a gun for self-protection didn't work out so well for Kenneth Walker, Breonna Taylor's boyfriend.

True - you need to be wise with the weapon - and Mr Walker was seemingly not.

Quote

At least in the Taylor case, a lot of police reforms are being enacted, from eliminating no-knock warrants to mandating that all officers wear body cams that must be on from 5 minutes prior to 5 mins after any raid.  The warrant process needs improving as well.

Cameras for under covers don't always make sense

And there is a need for the no knock warrant.  LIMITING is the better word.

There was no criticism for having daily briefings.

I am certainly not going to sit here and debate that.  You either know or don't.

I know. And you're wrong. There was no criticism of having briefings. There was criticism of what was being put forth as a briefing. They were fraught with disinformation and misinformation and very, very lacking with information. They denied science and the advice of his own team.

From fivethirtyeight

Quote
The Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled that ballots can arrive as late as Nov. 6 and still count as long as no evidence (e.g., a postmark) exists that they were mailed after Election Day (Nov. 3).

A state judge in Michigan decreed that ballots can be counted as long as they are postmarked by the day before the election (Nov. 2) and received by Nov. 17.

A federal judge ordered Wisconsin to count absentee ballots that are postmarked by Nov. 3 as long as they arrive by Nov. 9.
And North Carolina reached a tentative court settlement with plaintiffs that, among other things, would allow ballots to count as long as they are postmarked by Nov. 3 and arrive by Nov. 12. (However, the settlement still needs to be approved by a judge before it officially goes into effect.)

Importantly, however, these changes aren’t set in stone; Republicans may continue to contest them in court. At the very least, GOP legislative leaders in Wisconsin have already appealed that decision to the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals, and Republicans say they plan to take the Pennsylvania decision to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Guessing this was inspired by Dana Milbank's Reichstag on fire piece in WaPo.  Will read soon.

Voted yesterday.   Was verrry careful filling in those little ovals next to candidate names.
