By the way, there is a pretty good argument that Harris got Lincoln's motivation for not nominating a Taney replacement in 1864 wrong. Although there is nothing definitive either way it likely had more to do with Lincoln making sure Chase campaigned for him in the election, and his personal disdain for Chase - he once said he would rather swallow a chair than appoint Chase.

Cool

Thanks for the info

I have a few Lincoln bios - let me see what I can dig up

Kamala was so proud of her Lincoln usage.  She was ready.  I give her credit.  But of course through history what Abe did is not the norm.

No. But more than half of those who were nominated did not become justices.

That's DEATHS.

We have plenty more who don't recover fully or close to fully.

But you just keep ignoring them, like your tin pot dictator wannabe.

“If you look at history," Cruz said during an interview on ABC's "This Week." "If you actually look at what the precedent is, this is what happened 29 times. 29 times there has been a vacancy in the presidential election year."

Cruz said that presidents have made nominations “all 29 times.”

“That's what presidents do. If there is a vacancy, they make a nomination," he said. "What has the Senate done? And there is a big difference in the Senate, with whether the Senate is of the same party as the president or a different party of the president. When the Senate is of the same party as the president, the vacancy occurs at the election year, of the 29 times, those were 19 of them -- of those 19, the Senate has confirmed those nominees 17 times.

“If the parties are the same, the Senate confirms the nominee," Cruz added. "When the parties are different, that has happened 10 times -- Merrick Garland was one of them. Of those 10, the Senate has confirmed the nominees only twice. There is a reason for that. It is not just simply your party [or] my party -- the reason is that it is a question of checks and balances."

Yes.  As in, "did not get better."

If I get sick, jerk, and I remain sick, then I did not get better, even if I don't die.

Lifelong neurological damage does not qualify as "got better."

An interesting piece of research. The results of giving these homeless people thousands of dollars, directly, did not match the stereotype expectations.

Are brain deaths counted in that number?

You are clearly not getting better, and it’s been a very long time.

The poorest 50 percent of Americans, roughly 165 million people, collectively owned less net worth of the nation’s 59 richest billionaires, who have a combined fortune of about $2.09 trillion.

The richest Americans have been stockpiling stocks in recent years — the wealthiest 10 percent now own more than 88 percent of corporate equity and mutual fund shares, meaning they benefit most from the booming markets.

Wow.
So they pretty much have cornered the market!
The Fed propping up the stock market and Trump touting the market is all about wealth for the wealthy.

There's a reason the countries with the highest rated levels of personal happiness are Socialist Democracies.

I’m starting to like listening to trump recently.

I find the sound of fluid in his lungs bubbling up his throat when he tries to talk very soothing.

The tone of childish terror in his voice adds a nice contrapuntal harmony.

Congress should convert the Thurmond Rule from an urban legend into actual legislation, settling on a specific set of criteria for closeness to a presidential election.  For example, ACB was nominated 38 days from the election (the shortest distance from the election in history).  One criteria could be to look at early voting dates.  In South Dakota, that was Sept. 18th, which means that I could have already voted before Barrett's nomination.  So one possibility would be to say that no nominations can be made after the earliest states begin voting, which would provide a fairly rational demarcation point.
