https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/02/opinion/columnists/republicans-mccain-hypocrisy.html

They sat in seats of honor, near the front of Washington National Cathedral. They bowed their heads when appropriate. They looked up pensively and listened.

By all appearances, they were honoring their departed colleague, Senator John Sidney McCain III, during a majestic ceremony on Saturday. And by doing so they were showing America that leaders of both parties reject the hateful, petty, law-defying politics of President Trump. They were showing America what a better nation could look like.

But it was all an act — a cynical, hypocritical act that McCain, who had a keen eye for hypocrisy, would have seen right through.

It was an act for Mitch McConnell, the Senate majority leader. It was an act for Paul Ryan, the speaker of the House. It was an act, most jarringly, for Lindsey Graham, McCain’s dear friend and the senior senator from South Carolina. It was an act for Orrin Hatch, Rob Portman and nearly all of the other Republican members of Congress who attended the service.

It was an act because they have not kept faith with the principles that McCain held dear — and that he himself organized his memorial service to celebrate, as a clear rebuke to Trump and Trumpism. McConnell, Ryan, Graham and the others have instead done the very opposite of keeping faith. They have made possible Trump’s hateful, petty, law-defying politics.

Despite running a branch of government that the Constitution makes equal to the presidency, they have meekly assented to Trump. Entrusted with power, they have chosen complicity.

The congressional Republicans inside the Washington National Cathedral on Saturday would surely say they came to honor John McCain. But they were there for show. Faced with a choice, they have rejected McCain’s America for Trump’s.

The Congressional Republicans: cowards, and quislings.

And worth every penny.

If you can afford it, you should give it a shot as a sensible balance to whatever alt-news/alt-propaganda you've relied upon to build your stunning lifetime collection of ignorance.

btw, I gave you an accurate albeit edited take-away from that opinion piece.

Which is why he quoted a chunk of it for you.   You could try "thank you, " but I guess you don't see our cut/pasting here as a courtesy done for those with paywall issues.

CNN.  NY Daily News\Post, USA Today and publications from varied (read:  from both sides) non pay Twitter sources.

I think I am good, thanks.

I just step around the pay wall ...
« Reply #1864 on: September 04, 2018, 10:46:39 AM »

I simply stop a NYT or WaPo article from loading the paywall, after the article appears.  Pretty easy to do, once you get used to the timing.  One of the few advantages of having a slow internet connection.

NYTimes is easier as you can reload an article multiple times if you miss the right cutoff point.  Reloading on WaPo takes you to the homepage and makes you search for and click the link again.

Also, generally articles are not exclusive to NYT or WaPo, so you can just copy the headline and run a search, and usually find the article on a free site.  Takes an extra 10 secs usually.  Sometimes I can even find a longer version instead of the NYT edited/truncated version (usually a few extra paragraphs of details towards the end).

Article states that Trump wants to deny "dark-skinned Americans" the right to vote.

It's trash.

Aggregator/link sites such as Drudge Report, Drudge Retort and RealClear are useful to see what's out there and find some articles to read.

The only problem is the past 3 or 4 years everything has become so partisan that can be hard to find balanced/basic news articles.
I usually go to the AP news site and read their headlines and link through to stuff I'm interested in.

No news except to the people who deny racism remains as a major problem in the United States.
If it is how come our Global Moderator never links to blacks who think differenty?

Pastor stands firm

JONATHAN LANDRUM Jr.
Associated Press

A fiery, old-school pastor who is under fire for saying black America is losing "its soul" at Aretha Franklin's funeral stands firm by his words with the hopes that those critics can understand his perspective.

Rev. Jasper Williams Jr. told The Associated Press in a phone interview Sunday he felt his stirring sermon was appropriate at Franklin's funeral Friday in Detroit. He felt his timing was right, especially after other speakers spoke on the civil rights movement and President Donald Trump."I was trying to show that the movement now is moving and should move in a different direction," he said. "... what we need to do is create respect among ourselves. Aretha is the person with that song "R-E-S-P-E-C-T" that is laid out for us and what we need to be as a race within ourselves. We need to show each other that. We need to show each other respect. That was the reason why I did it."

Williams, who is the pastor of Salem Baptist Church in Atlanta, said his words about black women being incapable of raising sons alone and his thoughts on the Black Lives Matter movement were taken out of context.

heh

Discussion?

No.  Very seldom anything specific laid out

That you chose to ignore it or deny it doesn't mean it didn't occur.

The conversation about refusing legal asylum seekers the right to apply for asylum is a violation of our laws and our treaties, directed by the President's administration.

The kidnapping of children from those legal asylum seekers violated our laws and the Constitution.

The refusal to track them and initially to aid in recovering them was a violation of the Constitution, probably more than one. (Habeus Corpus, for one.)

The seizure of citizen's passports and denial of new ones without due process was a violation of the Constitution.

Locking up citizens because the officials "suspected" they might not be citizens is a violation of the Constitution.

That's not discussion

Its accusation.

And you have taken liberties here, sir.

Kidnapping?  Really?

The EXTREMITY of position is your (YES, YG - I mean it plural) greatest deficiency.

OK, how about we just start with the first article and then work our way down in a calm discussion?

Trump has attacked the press steadily, on a nearly daily basis, since taking office, and attempted to restrict its freedoms and personally attacked reporters who do nothing but accurately report matters of public record.  He has encouraged the harassment of reporters at rallies and other events, and has selectively banned reporters from press conferences.  He has called journalists "the enemy of the people."  This is a violation of both the letter and the spirit of 1st amendment.  Freedom of the press is considered, by pretty much anyone who has ever bothered to learn about the American democratic system, a basic foundational principle.

Agree/disagree?  Please provide factual evidence and reasoning to support your decision.  This is how they do it at real political forums.

This explains so much!  Wonder where Mr. Gibson took Mel and the rest of the family, then.  I'm thinking a theme park in Nevada somewhere.

What article are you referring to?  Got link?  Hard to discuss an invisible article.

The GOP and Trump are actively trying to do just that.
