Remember when "journalists" were writing with certainty that Kashoggi was cut up while still alive.
You have to realize that almost all the info on Kashoggi's killing has come from Turkish gov't leaks, through friendly media (about the only kind still allowed to operate in Turkey). The Turks have been motivated to keep the heat up on Saudi Arabia and MBS. And to discredit Saudi explanations.
There has been tantalizing talk of eavesdropped audio of the killing itself. Thus far unsubstantiated. The Saudi explanation Trump initially approved of was that it was a rogue group of Saudis who did the killing accidentally. But with a hit squad of 15 traveling from the kingdom, including reportedly a forensics expert with a bone saw, the idea of accidental death is far-fetched. And no one believes such a high profile hit team would be dispatched without MBS knowing.
The Saudis sent a team to Turkey to help investigate, and the Turks claim the Sauds were mostly just interested in knowing what the Turks know about Kashoggis killing. So they can try to concoct a story that might stick, instead of another one which will be contradicted within dyas.
The new info is Kashoggi was strangled upon entering. the Sauds are willing to go with that, which might even be true, because leaked Turkish reports are saying that calls were made form the Saudi Consulate to MBS in Riyadh, and Kashoggi talked to MBS on the phone before he was killed. And that is obviously a disaster for Saudi Arabia/MBS if true. So whether there were calls -- almost certainly Turkey knows there were -- and who spoke to whom, it's best for the Sauds to say Kashoggi was dead right away, while they'll deny MBS talked to anyone there. but even if he did, it was after the murder (which they'll claim he didn't know a thing about beforehand).
it's all a tricky, confused mess, with Turkey leaking all sorts of things, many of which they know to be true, others probably suppositions they leak as facts using them as feelers to learn more. All the while hinting that they know more. And the Saudis desperate to know what and how much the Turks actually know.
the Turks want to know 1) who did the killing and who authorized it 2) where the body is 3) who disposed of the body. Saudis are now claiming that they used a local agent for disposal and so they can't answer #2 or 3.
Next conundrum. The case doesn't go away until the body (and head) are found. The Saudis really don't want the body found if it's been dismembered with identifying fingers and teeth removed, face disfigured. So that's lose-lose for the Sauds.
Fucked up ish, but a pretty tremendous storyline ...
