Well this has been a mostly satisfying evening.

No matter how you slice it the GOP legislative agenda is dead.

My wrap up of tonight is this. Nancy Pelosi for Speaker of the House.

Congratulations

Mueller, Mueller, Mueller.

And if the Dems are smart (oh, boy!), they will put someone other than Nancy Pelosi in the Speaker's seat.

What, and deprive the GOP of their favorite demon?
They’re scared of her for good reason.

Beto even in a close tough loss in a very Red Texas, looks like a winner.

Exactly. She can demonize from behind that throne better than on it.

By the way, folks. It's the first day of the campaign for the Democratic Party's nomination for POTUS in 2020. Where is that one going?

Who is running and who should be running for the Dems?

Tough week ahead for Sinema fans.   Final tally of her and McSally could take that long,  per ABC.  No rhyme intended.

Hope the House can roll up its sleeves and start working on the kitchen table issues the newbies ran on.   And flipped governors look at fixing gerrymanders, if their legislatures are willing.   Sorry Abrams didn't make it - if they go to a runoff,  she is unlikely to win.   Runoffs have tended to favor the Republicans.  Who consistently go and vote.   I want to be gracious and say that Republicans remain the model of participatory democracy.

Good news that ex felon voting rights restored in Florida,  as Torn noted.   Gillum likely would have won,  had this happened earlier.   We will be hearing from that fellah again.

A Republican brothel owner and reality TV star has won an election for a legislative seat in Nevada's 36th Assembly District in spite of the fact that he died several weeks ago on 16th October.

https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/nevada/articles/2018-11-07/dead-brothel-owner-wins-election-for-nevada-legislative-seat

Dennis Hof was found dead at his Love Ranch brothel about an hour outside Las Vegas. Hof had spent the four previous days partying with notables from the sex industry and political world celebrating his 72nd birthday. His body was discovered by porn actor Ron Jeremy and a prostitute at the brothel.

Apart from owning a number of Nevada brothels, he also starred in the HBO adult reality series "Cathouse" and wrote a book titled "The Art of the Pimp," akin to Trump's book "The Art of the Deal."

County officials will appoint a Republican to take his place in the seat.

NY 19 the “Rapper” repealed and replaced Faso!

As I said way back when... once you give voters something they like and depend on (Social Security, Medicare and now ObamaCare) woe to the politician and/or party trying to take that program away.

Quick story...

One day I was in Atlanta GE for a meet. The cab from the airport, the driver had a thick African accent. I asked , "So where are you from?" he said.

"Minnesota."

The next week I was in Sand Diego for a meet. I'm in the cab, the driver has a thick African accent, Why waste a good conversation line? "Where are you from?"

"Minnesota."

Apparently these guys were in lotteries for US residency (if not also citizenship) as refugees and they were both assigned to  colleges in MN.

I can't quite imagine their shock when they saw snow. I talked to my Uber driver with the Jamaican accent and he talked about trying to wrap his head around snow as a construct when he visited Maine from TN (where he worked for Toyota.) The SD guy said that he drove a truck, and one day he had to drive to SD for a dropoff. He went home the next day and moved his wife and kids to CA!

How is it relevant? It's not really, except that Ilhan Omar was elected to Congress from Minnesota donchaknow.

I'm glad I used last night to catch up on sleep. It wasn't as brutal as I would have thought. But I could not stomach watching the returns. It brought back the last time I stayed up. PTERSD (Post Traumatic Election Returns Stress Disorder)

The Washington Post boldly headlined today “ A Great Day For Democracy!”
referring to the mid-term elections.

This is the local paper in D.C. that has described the presidency of Donald Trump as a “ grave threat” to our democracy.

Historically Presidents with low approval ratings lose an average of 37-40 House Seats and two Senators.
The votes are still being counted but it appears the dems will gain far less in the House( but take control) while the GOP will PICK UP 4 seats in the Senate.
The latter gives Trump a powerful boost in judicial nominees and slowing legislative initiatives from the House.
At the state level the GOP won key races in Texas, Florida, and Ohio where potential progressive leftist political stars were beaten. That means Trump has heavyweights on his side in the 2020 Electoral College.

I guess there was something for everyone in the elections.
Today the stock markets are reacting with gains and the Dow is nearing 26,000 again.

Seems the Post headline sums it all up pretty nicely.

Other than the investigations that they'll now be able to launch from the House side (to what end is to be determined), I think Democrats should be mildly disappointed in last night's results.

While the notion of the "blue wave" was always a pipe dream I think, a stark reminder of Trump's power is never fun.
