Part of the crush at Tijuana is due to the fact that the city is filling with migrants waiting to enter legally while the Trump administration has limited the number of asylum applications it will take, and taken months longer to address them.

And legally presenting yourself for asylum in order to protect your family from deadly violence in your home country has ZERO to do with not properly applying for a visit to the fucking White House.

In theory, they have a legal right to it; in practice, it’s by no means a guarantee they’ll be allowed to exercise it. In the hands of a president who routinely says that all asylum seekers should turn around and go home, and an administration that has sought to radically reduce the scope of asylum, the use of metering fits all too easily into a general strategy of attempting to reduce immigration to the US.

The question is how long they can wait before it becomes functionally indistinguishable from being turned away — or before they simply get fed up with being in limbo, and take matters into their own hands.
