Japanese town solves reduced fertility rate:

https://www.cnn.com/videos/tv/2018/12/28/news-stream-intv-ripley-jozuka-japan-town-paying-for-babies.cnn

It's unfortunate that short-sighted governments see population as a sort of "arms race."  My original degree was in biology, and we learned about the concept of "carrying capacity" in ecosystems.  The CC of homo sapiens is 2-3 billion people, for a sustainable population with a decent quality of life, minimizing destruction of ecosystems, preserving wild areas where we can rest our minds and recharge, etc.

So it really makes sense to let the process of dropping population happen, especially in countries that are extremely crowded, like Japan.  Sheer numbers are no longer needed for economic or military power, thanks to automation and AI innovation.  And extreme population density also means great vulnerability if supply chains are ever disrupted that bring in food and heating fuel and so on.

Even here in the U.S., with much lower population density, there is already a marked decline in the quality of life as the most congenial climates fill in with urban sprawl.  When even wild places become jammed with traffic and garbage, we have lost something precious.  And, of course, population growth systematically undoes every gain in fuel efficiency and water conservation and so on.  I can remember when the Colorado front range area was a pleasant place to get away, back in the sixties.  Now it's mostly sprawl, full of people who drive as if they've been driven completely insane by the crowding and stress.  And the people who seem to have the most children also appear to be the stupidest and the least likely to pass on any rational values about taking care of spaceship Earth.
You’d fit right in on Hillary’s Campaign team.  What with your expertise in defining “ deplorables”.

Clin5on did a good job defining deplorables - 'racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic". Which of those don't you find deplorable?

Remember, Red looks at himself in the mirror each morning and then proceeds with his day. To do that requires an epic feat of defining deviancy down. He’s not just working with fanciful definitions, he’s constructing a whole deplorable language for maladjusted shitbags like himself.

He has already "proudly" counted himself a Deplorable by Hillary Clinton's definition.

The declining (and aging) population in Japan is hurting their economy.  And that is a uniquely efficient country with super high employment rates.  The US would be destroyed by the working population drops Japan has seen over the last decade.

Economic growth in the US, in fact, is very tied to population growth.  We've been lucky that declining birth rates have been offset by immigration.  Enter the GOP doing their darndest to decrease that global economic advantage.

Uh oh. The Pelosi/Spartacus/Pochahontas democrat  liberals are out to scuttle Bernie Sanders.

In interviews, women told of makeshift living accommodations on the road, where they were asked to sleep in rooms along with male co-workers they didn’t know. Women who had access to salary records were taken aback to learn that some female staff members made thousands of dollars less than their male counterparts.

Two delegates who supported Mr. Sanders two years ago recently told his staff that he can’t run for president again without addressing the sexism they believe surfaced in his last campaign.

LOL

The President of the United States repeats Russian propaganda and endorses the invasion of Afghanistan during a totally incoherent cabinet meeting that should leave anyone severely concerned about his mental fitness...so naturally REDSTATEWARD is concerned ("Uh oh!"...lol) about Bernie Sanders' 2016 campaign.

Nancy Pelosi is a REDSTATEWARD (and GOP) trigger, someone who in their mind should so automatically invite derision that just saying her name is enough to make a point..."Uh oh!...Pelosi!"

Meanwhile, Paul Ryan leaves the House in the midst of a shutdown he was too weak to prevent, his party losing power by historic margins, and a 12% approval rating.

"Uh oh!...Ryan!"

This is one of those news stories of a refugee growing up and preparing to live off government money for a couple years, at least, and longer if she can manage it. She makes it clear she feels no shame about it and she has no intention of looking for an honest job - and the part time job she has she took from a real American who wanted it!

Growth is the philosophy of a cancer cell.   I have not heard a compelling argument for growth,  when economic growth is generally accompanied by greater deterioration of the environment.  Capitalism is an amoral system.  You have to have an ideology controlling it that has some ethical basis or you get.... what we have now.   Trying to have "advantage" over other nations is how the human race got in this mess.   As for aging populations, that's a problem when we equate age with decrepitude and being a burden.   And that's an area where our problem solving ability is growing..the good kind of growth.   Population growth leads to competition for scarcer resources and,  in this day and age,  a certainty of catastrophic war.   The population bomb is still ticking,  but when food supplies drop as the oceans continue to acidify,  and arable land becomes desert,  and the great pollinating insect die-off continues...the bomb will go off.   Cheers.
