We have all lost something priceless today, and I feel terrible for the people of France.

I also feel terrible that the French needed to respond to an insensitive, asinine, and totally embarrassing suggestion coming from our "President."

It's pretty devastating, Tony.

But how would you have proposed preventing it? Tear out its innards and put pipes through with sprinklers? Replace all the wood inside with flame retardent furniture?

I am sure that the keepers of other great iconic structures around the globe are going to face scrutiny following this conflagration, but for all that I wish it were otherwise, I am not sure how they can both preserve these places as they are and protect them from fire.

No real information yet, but two of our Islamophobes are already theorizing wildly.  BAE.

Lots of ignition sources when people are renovating.  Old timber churches lack firestops, have massive oxygen supply, and burn easily.  Facade stone will survive and hopefully other architectural elements.  My thoughts are with the firefighters of Paris, faced with an extraordinarily dangerous job.  Stuff that falls from the rafters has a long way to pick up speed.

No firefighting lives should be risked if there are no people inside...let it burn if necessary.

The Pope/Vatican should pay to replace it if that's what they want to do.
