Warren has also pointed out more forcefully than any rival that Trump tried to derail an investigation not just into his own campaign’s conduct, but also into the Russian attack on our democracy -- which Trump has refused to acknowledge happened at all, hamstringing preparations for the next attack.
As McConnell’s speech showed, the GOP is all in with that as well. And the GOP appears all in with Trump’s escalating efforts to treat House oversight of the administration as fundamentally illegitimate....
Meanwhile, Trump may try to block former White House counsel Donald McGahn, who witnessed multiple Trump efforts to obstruct justice, and possibly even Mueller, from testifying to Congress. The administration won’t release Trump’s tax returns, violating the law. And Trump has vowed to resist “all” subpoenas.
Legal experts tell Adam Liptak that such wholesale resistance to oversight threatens the constitutional order, placing Trump, as one puts it, “above the law.” Few if any Republicans are raising an eyebrow about any of this.
Thus, Warren’s call for an impeachment inquiry is linked to a big argument -- one broader than that of any other candidate -- about how the GOP has actively enabled Trump’s authoritarianism, lawlessness, shredding of governing norms, and embrace of the corruption of our political system on his behalf.
Warren is comprehensively treating Trump as both a severe threat to the rule of law in his own right, and treating this as inextricably linked to a deeper pathology -- the GOP’s drift into comfort with authoritarianism...
LOL
Warren’s Impeachment Call rests on only one underlying premise: there is no political risk for her since she doesn’t get a vote on the matter.
What political risk exists for her after she votes that does not exist after a publicized speech she made on the Senate floor calling for the impeachment inquiry?
She has no vote on impeachment so her political risk is zero in Massachusetts. She can plot a Presidential campaign without much fear of losing her Senate position. For the House Democrats elected in heretofore red districts the risk is much greater.
LOL @ impeachment being a politically risky proposition in Massachusetts.
And question remains unanswered. She has stepped out and made her view on the issue clear without casting a vote. Why do you think an actual vote would matter?
Because impeachment is not going to happen. Not to mention her “stepping out” has done nothing for her in the candidate polls.
You still aren’t making sense. Yes, impeachment isn’t going to happen. We know this. Can you not answer my question, then? If Warren were seeking the protection that there being no Senate vote on impeachment gives her, why is she doing everything she can to make her position clear despite that?
And the comments in question came yesterday. Too soon to be reflected in any poll. And she isn’t the only candidate (in fact, not the only Senator candidate) to call for an impeachment inquiry.
Here is what I think; you took the opportunity that someone was talking about Warren to make a snide comment about Warren’s positions being based on political calculations in a situation where that doesn’t make any sense, and now can’t defend what you said.
There is plenty to justify an impeachment inquiry. From the over 400 Federal Prosecutors who think Trump obstructed justice, to the multiple criminal inquiries currently under way, to the fact that just today Trump is making clear that he thinks the powers of oversight granted to the House by our Constitution do not apply to him. Some Democrats may be making political calculation in not pursuing that impeachment inquiry. Those calling for one are justified given the facts.
