Decriminalization.  Treat addiction as an illness and work on root causes.  Heal addiction and you dry up demand.  Dry up demand and black markets wither.  Help people find meaningful goals in life and they are less likely to seek oblivion in a pipe or needle or pill.

Tony:  "We need to stop the flow of illegal drugs into our nation"

HOW?

Capitalism... legalize drugs like booze and regulate them accordingly. Treat addiction as an illness as with alcoholism. Those actions will help dry up the illicit profit motive and expand the legal profit motive.

If there is no demand for illegal drugs there will be no supply.

Of course there will always be an underground market for everything, hell folks buy cigarettes in the South and sell them in areas with high tobacco taxes...

So Trump has called off negotiations with the democrats in the House.
Probably a good thing for taxpayers.
Yesterday Pelos outlined types of projects  to be funded under her plan;
roads, bridges, mass transit, and broadband Internet connections, as well as water and sewer systems and “all of the things that have enormous needs.”

She noted that the American Society of Civil Engineers has opined that trillions of dollars are required to build or repair U.S. infrastructure.

But, amazingly, Pelosi then put the price tag at $ Two Billion !

Well, gee.  Looks like she is planning on another stimulus plan she and Barack forced down our throats in 2009. A plan loaded with payoffs to fat cat democrat donors and those ubiquitous
“ green projects “ that accomplished almost nothing.
Well it did help cleanse Washington of a lot of  Democrats so there was that.

The stimulus plan also put money intoo the public sector when trillions of dollars of wealth disappeared in a few months' time and there was no private money to be had, helped stop the bleeding from the disaster of the Great Bush Recession and started us on the prolonged and consistent period of growth we have been experiencing for theast 9 years. So there is that.

It’s been ten years. You can cut the bullshit. No one forced anything down your throats in 2009.

”For the GOP, it is fairly easy to see why the vote went the way that it did. Assume that Republicans had largely voted "yes." There is a serious downside to such a vote. There is a strong sense among the Republican rank-and-file that the party's defeats are in part tied to its abandonment of fiscal responsibility over the past eight years. Voting for $900 billion in deficit spending would have done little to assuage these concerns. To illustrate the potential dangers, one need only examine the trajectory of Saxby Chambliss' Senate race after his "yes" vote on TARP. And given that Republicans didn't manage to kill the bill outright, the risk of being blamed for any further failure of the economy is minimal.

On the other hand, the upside of a "yes" vote is difficult to see. The Republicans need many more members if they want to have a hand in the House's legislative process. But minority parties rarely (if ever) make large gains in Congress by being seen as bipartisan. If Republicans and Democrats vote for Obama's stimulus and it works, the credit will largely accrue to Obama and, by extension, the Democrats. No Republican is going to defeat a Democrat by saying, "He voted for a bipartisan stimulus package and it worked!"

https://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2009/01/explaining_the_stimulus_vot.html

Meanwhile...

Republicans fought to make the bill smaller and less effective at a moment when the nation could have used a huge shot in the arm and then they all voted against the bill... but they were more than happy to stand in front of their local media with the big scissors and big poster board checks.

“Hey! Look what I did for you... (you suckers!)”

They pushed and pushed to make the bill smaller and less effective and then voted against it anyway. Then went out and posed with the big checks at the ribbon cuttings.

Ah yes. 2008. Democrats full of hope and glory with control of the Federal Government.
Two years later the Blue Dog democrats walked the House plank after the electorate soured on the political spectacle of the Stimulus and ObamaCare.
And then came the Senate in 2014.  And after 8 years of arrogance from Obama, to say nothing of his business stifling " regulation pen", the hand picked successor to his economic house of cards went down to an inglorious defeat in an election she " could not lose".
With a rollback of regulations and a tax cut the economy took off and all demographics benefitted with jobs and higher wages.

Thanks.  I will say the first two answers strike me as confusingly contradictory.  It's hard to treat addiction as an illness, if you throw (end user) addicts in with hardened criminals and lock them up for several years.  And the stats support my qualms - in nations where a drug is decriminalized, the rate of addiction tends to drop and more people get into treatment plans and safe spaces to use while they are still looking at the hard path ahead of them.  Just to make sure we're clear on terms:  decriminalization is not legalization.  Walter White, and distributors and dealers are still criminally charged.  It's the user who is offered a chance to heal and get their act together.  It's also worked in a couple U.S. cities.  France, Germany, Netherlands, Portugal, Norway, Ireland, Czech Rep, and several Latin American countries, and others have all had positive results from decrim.

BTW, bit of a digress, but if y'all havent seen "Fed Up," the 2014 documentary on how Big Food has been ignoring the health effects of its products, it's one of the clearest and best assemblage of facts out there.  The biggest addictive drug in America is sugar.  See the part about the rats who had access to bottles with cocaine on one side and sugar water on the other.  Sure, that's one of those journalistic eye-poppers, and there's much better science that's explored in the case against sugar in the film, but it does get your attention.  As do the 12 year olds who weigh over 300 pounds.

News Item-May 22

Some 88% of millennials — a higher percentage than any other age group — accept that climate change is happening, and 69% say it will impact them in their lifetimes. Engulfed in a constant barrage of depressing news stories, many young people are skeptical about saving for an uncertain future.

So with those published fears and the constant chatter from the New York bartender that the world as we know will end in 12 years Congress will get cracking on the Green New Deal?

Meh.

Today with an over-whelming bi-partisan vote in excess of 400 votes the House made it easier for all of us to save for retirement.

The House on Thursday passed a bipartisan bill aimed at boosting retirement savings that also fixes an issue with the GOP tax law.

The bill, known as the SECURE Act, passed by a vote of 417-3. The three lawmakers who voted against the bill were GOP Reps. Justin Amash (Mich.), Thomas Massie (Ky.) and Chip Roy (Texas).

The bill includes a number of provisions designed to encourage businesses to offer retirement plans and to make it easier for people to save for their retirements.

These include provisions that would make it easier for small businesses to join together to offer retirement plans, treat graduate students’ stipends as compensation for purposes concerning individual retirement accounts (IRA), allow long-term and part-time workers to participate in companies’ 401(k) plans, and eliminate the age maximum for contributing to IRAs.

“This is the most substantive promotion of retirement savings in the last 15 years,” said House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal (D-Mass.)

Red needs his desperate fiction. All signs in reality point to him going extinct.

He’d have had a better chance if he could only distinguish between billions and trillions.
