Staying in the Tampa area, the screened porches are called lanais from the Hawaiian. Very uncomfortable to sleep in the mostly 80s and 90s. Surprisingly utility bills are over 50% lower than in the northeast. First hurricane of the season Dorian is coming.
Yeah, I've heard of those. If it doesn't fall below the 80s at night, that is indeed a hot climate. As the article points out, people actually adapt to that pretty well where AC doesn't exist. The body physically changes so that one can sleep comfortably at those temperatures. And local dress is usually better suited (NPI) to the climate where AC isn't available. I don't know if that can still happen, now that so many people have lived an entire life always with AC (and are also, on average, much more obese than in the past). And cities are so hot now, due to the UHI effect. I remember living in southern Kansas in a smallish city, without AC in the early 60's and everyone did fine with box fans and open windows at night.
