Sometimes the wheels of science grind slowly, but grind they do.

I suspect the scientist in question is as brilliant as was thought, but that the pressure of living up to that pushed him over the edge.

Big thumb up from me.  I have been critical of the determinist interpretation for many years.   The original experimental design was sloppy and made too many assumptions.
