As Rizzo explained, when discussing having refused the vaccine thus far, "This is bigger than baseball. ... This is about life."

He has "light symptoms."

Well, that was no fun.

But in the last inning, as Lenny D was talking, he made mention of "right off the bat."

Had to know. Saw a reference to the 1880s and the suggestion that it was almost certainly from baseball, with cricket a small chance.

But I found this story from 1869 with the expression:
