Solid game by Pivetta. Relief had a hiccup in the 8th, but the Bostonians survived it.

TB with a nice shutout of the Yankees tonight.

The Yankees have had 24 hits and 5 runs in the last 37 innings.

Make that 28 hits and 6 runs in the last 46 innings.

Hey - good counting by you.

----

I have to say - the new playoff format is already producing excellent results - with interesting wild card races (and a CLEAR benefit to winning division) to be followed by 4 intense first round 3-game playoff series.

Astros have home field advantage now, Yankees fans.

Phils with the lopsided win in Cincy last night led by Kyle Gibson's 11 K's and the team's 18 hit attack. Rhys Hoskins had 2 homers and 5 rbis. Hoskins now has a season total of 26 homers. He is only the fourth MLB player with four seasons of 26 or more homers since 2018. The others are Judge, Goldschmidt, and teammate Kyle Schwarber.

Schwarber remains out of the lineup with that calf strain. Calf injuries are tough to heal from, so that could be a big deal going into September.

One final note, the Phils finally reached the 10,000 win level. The last team to do so of those who were around in the 19th century.

I hope Schwarber rejoins the lineup soon!

The role of expansion teams is clear when one realizes that the Phillies are the only one of those original teams with a record below .500!

The Yankees have more wins than the Phils, despite the delayed start. Seems likely that they will pass the Pirates, Reds, and even the Braves in the relatively near future. The Pirates may join the Phils in sub-.500 land.

The Red Sox are likely next to pass 10,000 wins. Based on the current versions of each, they seem unlikely to pass the Phillies soon in total wins, but it is hard to project longer term.

If they can keep up their current pace, the Astros will be the first of the expansion teams to be net positive for their history.

Thanks for the lead to the issue.

Blame Buster Posey. This is the second time in a week that a player who was out has been ruled safe by a liberal application of the Posey rule.

I really miss the old days, like Willie Mays Rocketting his way to home plate against Pat Corrales:

And if a player gets knocked unconscious on the play, well, that's what they get for putting their head there.

In both plays the runner was safe. In one play, the catcher is uninjured.

Orioles/Blue Jays game is worth tuning into now - 6th inning and Stripling is being ignored in the dugout.

I don't know what plays you're looking at, but you're wrong.

The picture you linked ended up with Mays safe, after initially being called out.

Corrales let go of the ball because he was knocked out.

Quote
(Original Caption) San Francisco Giant's Willie Mays collides with Phillies Pat Corrales at home plate here, on a play in which Allen threw wild past 1st and Callison retrieved the ball and threw it to the plate. Umpire Augie Donatelli first called Mays out, then reversed call as Corrales who was knocked out on the play dropped the ball.

Perhaps you are thinking of a different play.

Great double come-from-behind win tonight for the Yankees. They fought back from down 4-0 to tie it in the 8th, then fell behind 7-4 in the 10th inning. A grand slam by Donaldson in the bottom of the 10th took care of that.

Red Sox pulled back to .500 with a solid, if not stress-free 8-3 win over the Pirates.
