https://www.deseret.com/utah/2020/11/28/21724530/news-monolith-mystery-disappears-from-remote-desert-southeast-utah-blm

Ryan Bacher, an avid Utah outdoorsman and helicopter pilot, flew with friends to see the monolith on Friday. He said there were dozens of others there, too, “looking at this fun piece of art.”

“Twenty-four hours later, my close friend, who is also a helicopter pilot, flew his family down to see as well and found it taken down,” Bacher said, adding he would like to know who did it.

Left in the monolith’s place was a stack of red rocks and a steel prism-shaped object....

This gentleman was seen near the monolith, shortly before it disappeared....

That would be impressive.  Logistically.

Meanwhile on a hill in Germany.....

German police have launched an investigation into the disappearance of a peculiar phallic-shaped sculpture from a mountainside in Bavaria, local media say.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-55142062

The two-metre tall (6.5ft) wooden statue was apparently chopped down over the weekend, the Allgaeuer Zeitung newspaper reported
.
The statue stood for years on the Grünten mountain, south-west of Munich.
Now, all that remains of the monument is a small stump and some wood chips.

It is not known who originally carved and erected the sculpture, which has become a landmark on the 1,738m-high (5,702ft) Grünten mountain, attracting many hikers to the area.

Where's Dildo?

Well, this is sad, but I can see their point regarding desert ecosystems and hordes of people tramping through them....

Metal monolith mania has swept the world in the past two weeks.

Now, a third metal slab has appeared atop Pine Mountain in Atascadero, California.

Hikers stumbled across the 10-foot-tall, stainless-steel monolith on Wednesday morning. It's almost an exact match to two other metal monoliths that were discovered in Utah and Romania in the past two weeks.

According to the local outlet Atascadero News, the California monolith was three-sided, just like the one in Utah. But unlike the one in the Utah desert, this 200-pound structure wasn't firmly attached to the ground and could be knocked over with a firm push.

That NE region of Romania -- Moldavia, not to be confused with Moldova* -- is quite interesting.  The monolith was located in a mountainous area about 30 miles east of Iasi (pronounced Yash) and 30 miles south of a cluster of UNESCO listed painted churches.

Iasi is an impressive cultural city with a superb opera theater and a culture palace and embroidered stone churches.
The painted churches by Suceava are quite impressive, I'd never seen churches with murals on all the outer facades.

Romania also impressed with it's huge variety of quirky roofs.  You end up roof-watching in the Romanian countryside.  And some of the roofs were made of sheet metal.

* Moldovans are basically Romanians who were split off from their Romanian cousins/brothers into a soviet republic of the USSR.  Every now and then there's talk of the two countries uniting, which can be a touchy subject, and the presence of Russian troops supporting a pseudo-country and enforcing a frozen conflict along the industrial Dniester River in Moldova doesn't help ...

Beautiful.  Spouse not big on global travel,  but she's willing to let me gallivant,  so I might look into Romania, being somewhat an architecture buff.

Romania was an interesting trip.  Our timing was perfect all around, which biases my impression some.  We stuck to the smaller towns and countryside, with the exception of Iasi, and skipped the capital Bucharest.  (we flew in and out of Sofia, Bulgaria).  Very rare for us to skip the capital/major city, and we even drove right around it.   But I think it was the right call, as Romanians really favor their countryside roots.

There are some lovely Germanic founded towns in the Transylvanian Mountains, such as Brasov where we caught a special mass for the 500th anniversary of Lutheranism at the medieval Black Church, and the charming small town of Sibiu.
Even when we hit the impressive but over-touristed and somewhat dull Peles Castle, there was a large country fair going on across the street, so lots of music, dancing, traditional costumes and huge balls of fried cheese and assorted foods and wine.

Besides the interesting and varied roofs of Romania, we passed through one or two country towns where some of the house gates were rather ornate and elaborate.  So must be a metal working tradition.  There's also the Merry Cemetery famous for its painted wooden crosses and light verse epitaphs, but that was in the northwest near Ukraine/Hungary where we didn't venture.  A lot of folk traditions and countryside life celebrated in Romania.  It's a lovely country, with a big wine culture, but it was a shame a lot of folks were depressed and felt like poor Euros and wanted to get out and experience Western Europe.
