Pats D

real or not?

historically good or product of an easy schedule.

discuss.

I think it's a mix of the two.

Pitt's averaged 24 points against everybody else. Differential = 21 (without Big Ben)
Miami's averaged 12+. Differential = 12+
NYJ's averaged 12+. Differential = 5+ (ignoring that their points came from anything but offense and sans Darnold most of the time.)
Buffalo's averaged 22+. Differential = 12+
Washington's averaged 14-. Differential = 7
NYG's averaged 20-. Differential = 6+

Yes, they are poor teams, but they have managed to score significantly more against their other opponents than against the Patriots. People seem to think Buffalo's defense is real, while doubting the Patriot's D. In the 3 games they had with common opponents they gave up 51 points. The Patriots played those same teams and, even if we ignore the last shut out, gave up 28 points. (I am again not separating out who scored what other than on offense, but the "it's real" argument gets stronger, not weaker, with that.)

Browns put it all together, 35 - 14. That is what Tuesday is for. Coping with reality is for Monday.

14 points seems within the margin of error of a Baker's dozen.

I thought Tuesday was for tacos.

We're on the same page with that comparative analysis, and its hard to draw any other conclusion than they are a very good D.

But I am looking forward to the next several games (against some pretty good teams/better QBs) to see how the D perfoms.

I suspect they hold up pretty well.

Except for Gilmore and Hightower it's essentially a "starless" defense.  Belichick is likely the greatest defensive mind ever.

Jaime Collins was a star here before he got himself pushed out of town, so it is hardly a shock to see him being amazing again.

And I think the twins are closer to stars than not.

But I could just be flat wrong - I have no idea how they are seen out of town, other than your thoughts. Certainly, nobody is nominating the D-line for top awards. It was great to see a couple linemen as fullback, however.

I don't think he's a star yet.  A great college player.  And my daughter met him a few times.

Plenty of first/second rounders

What constitutes a star?

Was the Steelers Ernie Holmes or Mike Wagner a star?

I worry about some of the choices your daughter makes.

They were solid defense players who played on a great UNIT.  I don't think either one of those guys would have been thought of as great players on other teams.

Gilmore and Hightower yes.

https://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/jets/ny-sam-darnold-ghost-comments-20191022-smuqfxeuwneufmz3kpoamyioc4-story.html

"Any of you ever hear voices while you're out working in the cornfields?"

"You hearing voices?"

"No, no. I'm just... uh... curious."

"Ray here says he's hearing voices."

"No..."

I think the Jets have bigger problems than Sam's seeing ghosts in the Pats defense, but certainly bigger than NFL Films' having shared it!
