saw this yesterday in The Ringer

https://www.theringer.com/nfl/2021/11/23/22799744/jason-garrett-giants-scapegoat

A Giants Failure

Jason Garrett is an easy scapegoat for the Giants shortcomings but the team has bigger problems

It doesn't pull many punches.

Of interest is the Gettleman critique.

heh

CAM!

Starting Newton today in junior league (9-1, second place)

Tough calls in Iron Man (9-2, first place) - looking at Burkhead vs Jets - over C Patterson, Ty Johnson and Stevenson - and M Brown tonight over some decent waiver wire pickups.  Going LaMarr over A Rodgers for today.

edit:    back to Cordarelle Patterson, who WILL start.  Burkhead to bench as I look for the best free agent to add in his place for future weeks

Pats wore down and dominated in the 2nd half against the beat-up Titans.

Run defense was so-so, gave up some huge plays, but D forced some timely turnovers.

Offense left points in the red zone

Titans are a tough team.

Danny Dimes played ok but Giants couldn't get the one needed forst down to cinch the game

Conservative play calling late didn't help.  Play calling all told was a revelation.

Should have lost by 1.  But well earned win.  And Giants should get to 5-7 next week.

Firing Gettleman would be a mistake.

CAM!

From NFL (dot) com's what we learned from Sunday's games:
Quote
The Cam Newton honeymoon ended in a disastrous fashion. The QB was brutal in his second start for the Panthers. Newton completed a woeful 5-of-21 passing (23.8%) for 92 yards with two interceptions for a 5.8 passer rating. Of Newton's 92 yards, 64 came on one completion to D.J. Moore early in the game. Newton rushed for the Panthers' only score of the game in the first quarter. From there, the bottom fell out. The signal-caller was under pressure and handled it poorly, missing a boatload of throws that had no chance. Newton also had four passes batted at the line of scrimmage by Dolphins defenders. The entire operation was a mess. On seven drives in the second and third quarters, Carolina earned a total of 58 yards. Down by 20 points, Newton was benched for the fourth quarter, with P.J. Walker sweeping up the garbage-time stats. It's back to the drawing board for Matt Rhule and Joe Brady to figure out how to generate consistency from the QB spot.
...
NFL Research: Newton's 5-of-21 passing (23.8%) is the lowest by a QB with 20-plus attempts in a game since Joey Harrington went 5 of 22 (22.7%) for DET in Week 14, 2004.

That's the Cam we know and love.

Firing Gettleman would be a mistake.

From Banks' link:
Quote
The first step is firing Gettleman. This should also be easy. The Giants are 18-40 since Gettleman was hired. The only teams with a worse record in that span are the Jets, Jaguars, and Lions. In other words, the Giants have joined the rock-bottom feeders.

Gettleman has made some good moves, even some that were unpopular at the time, like trading Odell Beckham Jr., drafting Julian Love and Darius Slayton, and signing free agents like Logan Ryan. Gettleman seems to be a genuinely good NFL scout and talent evaluator, but he seems really bad at applying that knowledge to running a team. There's a difference between spotting talent and knowing how much of your limited resources should be used to acquire and keep that talent. Gettleman has demonstrated little grasp of players' market value, either in cap dollars or draft pick value (i.e., drafting Barkley at no. 2, using a third-round pick on cornerback Sam Beal, and spending $18 million annually for Kenny Golladay). Perhaps Gettleman's real legacy will be drafting Barkley at no. 2, since no running back may ever be taken as high in the draft again. Gettleman might as well be Lucille Bluth from Arrested Development thinking that bananas cost $10.

I figured that if your post insisting that firing Gettlemen would be a mistake merited reposting that the key passage about Gettlemen from that article merited posting a first time.

It makes a stronger argument than you do.

I think the quarterback who won the Giants game today was Hurts.

I'd love to hear Whisk's current view of Mayfield vs paying Keenum much less.  This is ugly.
