Several Republican senators sign on to support last bipartisan infrastructure effort

Nearly a dozen Republican U.S. Senators have joined Democrats in the chamber to support a fledgling bipartisan compromise to spend hundreds of billions to repair and upgrade various infrastructure across the United States.

Eleven GOP senators signed onto the framework of a deal to support a $1 trillion package that targets transportation, broadband Internet and water upgrades without raising corporate taxes.

The proposal is a compromise to President Joe Biden's American Jobs Plan, which aims to upgrade critical U.S. infrastructure in need of repairs, like roadways, bridges and tunnels.

Republican support for Biden's plan has been rare and Wednesday's agreement marked a significant shift in the chances for a bipartisan effort on infrastructure.

"We support this bipartisan framework that provides a historic investment in our nation's core infrastructure needs without raising taxes," the Republican and Democratic senators said in a statement.

"We look forward to working with our Republican and Democratic colleagues to develop legislation based on this framework to address America's critical infrastructure challenges."

From GopherArchives

Fucking “Moderates.”
Note that rather than funding the plan through increased enforcement of existing laws, or.a.minimum corporafe.tax, or a repeal of the useless Drumpf era dividend enhancement plan, the "moderates" want to increase the gas tax. Which of course is a middle class tax, and contrary to Biden's intention to not raise taxes on us.

This was days after another group of Protestant clergy, representing 37 denominations and presided over by Norman Vincent Peale, had declared that a Roman Catholic president would be “under extreme pressure by the hierarchy of his church.”

Kennedy vowed that, if elected, the oath that he would follow was the one he took upon his inauguration to defend the U.S. Constitution.

At a time when some equated Catholic teachings to socialism, the Massachusetts senator said: “I believe in an America that is officially neither Catholic, Protestant nor Jewish; where no public official either requests or accepts instructions on public policy from the Pope, the National Council of Churches or any other ecclesiastical source; where no religious body seeks to impose its will directly or indirectly upon the general populace or the public acts of its officials.”

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/06/20/trying-pressure-biden-catholic-bishops-forget-lessons-jfk/

(...)

Biden is far from the first Catholic politician to in fact come “under extreme pressure by the hierarchy of his church” over their support of the law when it comes to abortion rights.

In 1984, New York Archbishop John J. O’Connor castigated then-Gov. Mario Cuomo (D) and Democratic vice-presidential nominee Geraldine Ferraro over their support for legal abortion. O’Connor would also warn Catholic politicians who supported abortion rights that they could face excommunication from the church. When Democratic presidential candidate John F. Kerry, also a Catholic, was campaigning in Missouri in 2004, St. Louis Archbishop Raymond Burke publicly warned him “not to present himself for Communion” — a punishment that Canon Law 915 reserves for “those who obstinately persist in manifest grave sin.”

(...)

But if Catholic clergy are going to draw such lines around the issue of abortion, why not punish politicians who disregard other pro-life social teachings of the church, including its opposition to the death penalty, which Francis has called “inadmissible”? Or its support for freer immigration and generous social services for migrants? Or helping those who are poor? Or its decree that addressing climate change is a grave and urgent moral imperative?

Exactly. As a Catholic I strongly oppose using the most sacred ritual of our church as a weapon in the culture wars. And have long noted with amusement those who denounce the likes of Biden and Pelosi as cafeteria Catholics for supporting a public policy that is against the life teaching from the Church while at the same time opposing literally every single other part of that teaching.

Repub motherfuckers want a free infrastructure lunch while they continue to fuck over the mothers and fathers and children of the middle and working class.

IMO the US has to get out of the taxing business and into risk management and asset management business.

The rich fuckers understand paying for hedge fund services, (2 and 20 is the standard fee structure) so charge them for all the risks and assets the US manages for them.

2% annual management fee on assets 20% on the gain (performance)

You do business here, then you pay a management fee, but we won't tax you.

The better you do, the better we do.

Why are moderates negotiating with the party that’s trying to thwart democracy on the strength of a lie?

Fuck Manchin and Sinrma and the nearly half dozen asshole Rockefeller Republicans masquerading as Democrats they’re sling for!

How are you gonna take the efforts of those who fought through all kinds of barricades to put you in the majority and piss that power negotiating against yourself?

Its the dance we do Larry called democracy.

we talk with other people who disagree with us and hope to find a middle ground.

But we could always shoot them or they could shoot us.

I'd prefer to talk first and see where get.

And there may be no common ground and Americans will decide who was the honest broker and who was full of shit.

And that's part of democracy too.

A new high school for film and television will open soon in Los Angeles...

https://www.stamfordadvocate.com/business/article/George-Clooney-and-Others-to-Open-Film-School-16265345.php

This is good, it will be great for the students, I would have loved to have done it when I was a teen.

Now, we need to create more film and television jobs in Hollywood by giving tax breaks to filmmakers, etc, and we need to make sure that filmmakers in Southern California have access to film funding.

Also, there needs to be a new modern film and television studio in Anaheim for the filmmakers in Orange County.

Of note too, we need to have apartment complexes for homeless actors, and for homeless people in the entertainment industry. We have people with a lot of skill and training who are out there homeless on the streets with the drug addicts and with the mentally ill people and with the criminals. We need special housing for homeless actors, like the Palm View Apartments which were paid for by the Actors Fund and the Chase and Royal Bank of Canada.

Also the neighborhood by Occidental Studios in East Hollywood is a good neighborhood for poor artists. When I was there the neighborhood was full of new immigrants, there were people from El Salvador, and from Colombia, and there was a Catholic Church in the neighborhood that had services in Spanish and in English.

That neighborhood would be perfect for poor artists who wanted to work at the Occidental studio.

And it is close to USC.

The Catholic Church by the Occidental movie studio is the Precious Blood Catholic Church, it is a beautiful church, they have both English, and Spanish, and they feed the needy, etc, it is a good Church.

If you are a starving artist in that neighborhood the Precious Blood Catholic Church will give you food. They feed the needy.

There are a lot of things to consider as we work to bring the film and television industry back to Hollywood.

Salute,

Tony V.

Republican legislators have erased any daylight between themselves and insurrectionist terrorists. Since they fail to allow any distinction, I make none in saying they brought a gallows to the Capitol with them.

Gallows, hits squads, kicking cops as near to death as they could manage, all to undermine the rule of law in service to their fantasy feudal ethnostate they are still trying to birth in you blood and mine.

Those aren’t people you can make deals with. Until you have broken every bone in their body you shouldn’t even try. If you are squeamish about smashing up so many bones, hack their limbs off.

If they still think they have or will have any chance to kill you, they aren’t able to engage in any productive conversation about government or any other topic.

I'm just going to say that this does strike me as overheated rhetoric.   When every metaphor used is physically violent,  then it can undermine your point when you are directing it against violence.

Discussion on increased crime rate and how it's going to fuck up the Dems in 2022: Crime “could be the issue that, frankly, makes it impossible for Democrats to hold on to the House next year,” said Hank Sheinkopf, a New York-based Democratic consultant.

Sheinkopf argued that too many on the left “don’t understand that crime and disorder are unacceptable to the entire population. People will lie to pollsters and go into the voting booth and vote for the person they think is going to protect them.”

The abruptness with which crime has returned to a central role in political debate is striking.

Violent crime rates fell for years after the crack epidemic of the late 1980s and early 1990s faded. Senior law enforcement officers like Bill Bratton, who served stints as police chief in Boston, New York and Los Angeles, accrued near-celebrity status. Crime became less politically salient, too.

Now, things have changed.

Homicide rates rose about 25 percent nationally last year. The figures were even worse in many cities. And the problem is not abating.

The murder rate in Atlanta has risen more than 50 percent year-on-year as of May. In Miami, the murder spike is around 30 percent. Similar patterns have played out in smaller cities. A New York Times report earlier this month highlighted Jackson, Miss., where the homicide rate rose 70 percent in the first three months of 2021.

It doesn't help that some are busy turning criminals into heroes.
