Boston Red Sox Writer: The guy who is number one in post-season pitching for games, WHIP, ERA, and Saves, with the MOST INNINGS PITCHED, is NOT a HOFer.

https://www.telegram.com/news/20181222/bill-ballou-mariano-rivera-not-getting-this-writers-hall-of-fame-vote

And again, writers should not be voting for the HALL.
Particularly, the obvious home team supporters among them.

Ballou is not really a Red Sox writer - he writes for Worcester!

But here is where he illustrates that he is full of shit:
Quote
My thought on the Hall of Fame is that it is more than numbers, that its members must have the kind of presence that would make somebody buy a ticket — not hometown fans, but general baseball fans — just to say they saw him play.

Rivera fits that description. He is a larger-than-life performer whose character is impeccable. He has had a long career, albeit in a role I do not value, a role I equate with a PAT kicker in football or a shootout guy in hockey.

If that's Ballou's view of the Hall of Fame and he thinks Rivera fits, then his decision to [inot[/i] vote for Rivera has nothing to do with whether Rivera belongs and everything to do with Ballou's wanting something to write about and a way to distinguish himself.

Ballou belongs in the Hall of Petulance.

Ballou's argument is that the closer's role has been overblown and is very limited.

He may be right in that regard, and probably accounts for that only six (I think) relievers have been elected to the HoF.

I'd vote for Rivera. Some guys deserve the Hall and Rivera is one of them.

Robertson inks two year deal with Philadelphia.

Keeping an eye on Robertson vs Familia.  We chose.  Have to live with Jeurys.  Though he sure did look comfy as a 7th 8th inning guy.

If I were a degenerate gambler like Kiid, I'd bet on Harper winding up back with the Nationals.

That was the argument he presented, Banks, but it is not what he stated the Hall was about.

Using his own stated standard, he is just a dick.

Not to mention that it is not as if Mariano is the first one in, either.

Ballou's premise was ok, and worth discussing but his arguments were all over the place.

Single A rhetoric

Presumably he has not voted (or abstained) for closers for HoF in the past.

Balou showed he knows very little about the game of baseball, but very much what it means to be a fan of one team.

Ballou was a huge Sharks fan and had his heart broken when they bolted Worcester for Cali.

Little known Ballou fact-his grand-father, Emile "The Cat" Ballou was the legendary goalie for the the old AHL team the Philly Rockets.

My 9-282 is a bit short.  What are Phil's going - 12/400?

Nats could have floated that number to hurt rivals' offers. Wait and see.

Story is Britton's deal makes it obvious that Robertson should not have been his own agent.

I don't know....
