Wicked Little Letters was a hit in the Can household.  Great ensemble performance, with Woman Police Officer Moss standing out as she navigates the shoals of the boy's club.  Standing out was no easy task, given high calibre performances from Jesse Buckley (whose lopsided grin serves her well as the free-spirited Rose) and Olivia Coleman (as a pious huddled mass yearning to breathe free of her monstrous father).

The authorship of the wicked letters seems fairly obvious from early on, and the movie doesn't hold its cards too close to its chest, providing ample clues as to who might have written such fine invective as   Miss Swan, you bloody fucking old saggy sack of chicken piss. You want fucking in the nose, you old beetle!"

Random obs

Die Slut   - "It's German."

My spouse informs me that the term for casting South Asian female police officers or Afro-British magistrates in 1920 England is color blind casting.  The term entered common parlance roughly around the first season of Bridgerton.  I seem to roll with it, though there are moments, especially in Bridgerton, where it does make me pull back from the story for a moment to consider the departure from period realism.

I think they stole that from The Simpsons. There is an episode where Sideshow Bob is applying for parole and it is revealed he has a huge tattoo on his chest reading, Die Bart, Die!  He explains "It's German. It means 'The Bart, the'" and gets his parole.

Arguably though they stole the concept from A Study in Scarlett.

It seems there are, for most viewers, the occasional story which one can acknowledge is well done - writing, directing, acting, photog all top drawer - but one doesn't care to watch further.   That's my experience of Baby Reindeer, the much acclaimed Netflix series.  Urg.

Little girls, I am in the business of putting old heads on young shoulders

Jean Brodie remains prime viewing.

Her Violet Crawley was one of the best things about Downton Abbey.

On a happier note, JL Curtis and Nigel Tufnel celebrate their 40th anniversary this year.  Also, the 40th anniversary of Spinal Tap.  Tufnel had a good year, in 1984.  Up to 11 on the dial.

Also recently learned that Guest was briefly a member of the House of Lords.  This I truly would not have suspected about him.

Strul, currently on Netflix is an enjoyable Swedish dark comedy which riffs off the Hitchcock trope of an ordinary man in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Both Hooked on a Feeling, and the vocalist on Blue Swede's 1974 cover of the song, appear in the movie.  This latter cameo I suspect is only an Easter egg for Swedes or regular watchers of the Eurovision contest.

Could someone, again, please remove "ooga chaka" from my brain?

See How They Run is a moderately enjoyable Agatha Christie meets Adaptation by way of Tom Stoppard send up. Plenty of Easter Eggs for Christie fans, fom the obvious (Stalker: What part of France are you from? Concierge: Belgium) to the deep dives (A list of Dentists comprises the names of dentists from Poirot novels). Dame Agatha makes an appearance herself, as does her husband Max, Dickie Attenborough and Sheila Sim, producer John Woolf and two of his wives. Mystery is not much, but it is fun.

With the passing of Kris Kristofferson then I recommend the movie "Convoy" starring Kris and Ali MacGraw. Ali MacGraw was beautiful when this film was made, and she wrote a book that I read and it was good, and she was married to Steve McQueen, Ali is great, I think she still lives in Malibu. The film "Convoy" was based on the CW McCall song. My Father was a Hay Broker, and he drove a truck to deliver the hay to ranchers and to dairies, etc, and we had CW McCall on 8-Track. RIP to Kris.

Salute,

Tony V.

With the passing of Mitzi Gaynor, I am reminded of this knock knock joke

Knock knock.
Whos there?
Sam and Janet.
Sam and Janet who?
(sings): Sam and Janet Evening...

There is nothing like that dame.

Though sadly my first thought was not "Mitzi Gaynor died?" but rather, "Mitzi Gaynor was still alive?"

Though I should also note that for some reason, I thought she had been in the TV version of Peter Pan I saw as a wee lad. But that was Mary Martin... who played Nellie Forbush in SP on stage.

Well, I had a Lime-like Jude Lawbender moment last night, with Kit Harington and Richard Madden who play Jon Snow and Robb Stark on GoT.  And many would agree they are well cast as brothers (or half-brothers anyway, since Snow is a bastard), given their resemblance.  I was watching Madden who costars with Idris Elba in The Take, and I thought, hey, that's Jon Snow!  But no, it was Robb Stark.

Both Harington and Madden appear in the film Eternals, as well, a casting no doubt influenced by their common career springboard.
