Unelected?  Is your doctor elected?  If not, why do you go to them?  Also it is likely that many lawmakers respect medical expertise and would not see the Burkes as "eminently qualified."  I think the unelected pencil pushers (a term which would describe a vast majority of America's pool of professional expertise) have a lot of company.

How many biological parents would want their child adopted or fostered by someone who will tell them to stick to lifelong chastity?  Or deny them hormone replacement therapy, when it is medically advised and allows gender to match sex?  Or tell them they are being castrated if they seek HRT?  There's plenty of shitty parenting going on in this world, no need to encourage more.
