Without diving into numbers the way Kiid does, it strikes me that if these same voters were choosing in the AL in 2016, Verlander (or Kluber) would have gotten the nod over Porcello.

Which confirms my opinion that the writers have no business creating the news and handing out awards in this sport or any other.

If anyone had any doubt about Philadelphia Phillies owner John Middleton’s intentions this winter, he made it abundantly clear before leaving the Major League Baseball owners’ meetings.

“We’re going into this expecting to spend money,’’ Middleton told USA TODAY Sports. “And maybe even be a little bit stupid about it.’’

Middleton laughed, then said without smiling: “We just prefer not to be completely stupid."

But, oh, how they will be spending.

Yes, he is talking about you, Bryce Harper and Manny Machado.

The Phillies have just $68.9 million on the books in 2019, according to salary information obtained by USA TODAY Sports. That figure drops to $50.68 million in 2020 and plummets to $15.1 million in 2021.

“It’s exciting to contemplate what we may be able to do this off-season,’’ Middleton said. “We know the free agent class this year is really, really good.’’

Could they spend in excess of $700 million to land the two biggest fish in the free-agent sea?

“I don’t know who you’re referring to,’’ Middleton said, with a laugh. “But we will be spending.’’

Fox re-ups with MLB

Major League Baseball and Fox Sports announced they had extended their national television rights agreement. The terms were not disclosed, but two people with direct knowledge of the deal said it was for seven years, through the 2028 season, and $5.1 billion.

That is a significant increase over the current deal with Fox, which expires after the 2021 season and was for eight years and $4.2 billion, according to the Sports Business Journal.

So I was watching Showtime's "Ray Donovan" last night, (a lot of bad acting but fun) and in a closing scene, after Ray beats the shit out of a bad guy with a baseball bat, he's asked by his daughter's fiancee, why he uses a wood bat, as studies have shown aluminum get at least 5% more distance.

and Ray answers, “Did Carlton Fisk use fucking aluminum when he won Game 6? No. Fucking wood.”

It cracked up.
