Always liked that last for the lyrical use of the word "carapace". Almost as good as...

There are so few songs that deal with parthenogenesis and make cheeky observations about the underlying rot of western civilization and its hedonistic treadmill. I learned about Shriekback the year I tried shaving my head and then had two coworkers tell me I looked like Barry Andrews.  No.  I had only known him as with XTC, a band that imprinted itself on my mind as having written a song about my friend's cat.  The cat was named Nigel.  My then GF and I had to keep Nigel for six weeks and so found ourselves...

was a favorite of my father too, an expression from his farming days, like "work him like a rented mule" and "ass like a busted bale of hay." I have no idea the source of either "hotter than a popcorn fart" or "hot snot" though I can attest that the use of the latter can draw incredulous stares from the uninitiated at the dorm lunch room table.

Popcorn refers to the type that burst forth in a percussive manner (ptt! ptt!) and cause a sudden warming of the perianal region.  Oh wait you meant source in the etymological sense.   Right.  Hm.

I remember some of the tracks having a surreal take on Anne Frank.  Late 90s, I was not really willing to delve into its abstract interior spaces, so I never gave it much time.  It's nice being old and having time to explore some of these voices from the past.  You and Lime are causing some weird echoes to froth up out of my memory hole.

I believe I read somewhere that Robert Pollard is among the ten most prolific songwriters ever.  And among the drunkest too.

Surely, number 1 on that list has to be the late, great Shane MacGowan.

More mondegreens.  Because you can never have enough.

Theres a bathroom on the right. (CCR)

Bring me an iron lung. (Steve Winwood)

Hope the city voted for you. ( Olivia Newton-John)(Hopelessly devoted to you.)

Gladly the cross-eyed bear. (a old hymnal classic, for some possibly the Ur-mondegreen)

99 love balloons (that Euro chick whose name I forget)

Weve got tunes, tall microwave ovens (Dire Straits)

Until looking up the lyrics quite recently I thought The Queen of Eyes (above) had "fat laced thighs."

I wish that you were here with me to pass the dull weekend.
I know it wouldn't come to love, my heroine, pretend.
A lady stepping from the song we love until this day.
You'd settle for an epitaph like "Walk Away, Renee".
The sun upon the roof in winter will draw you out like a flower.
Meet you at the statue in an hour.
Meet you at the statue in an hour.

Har!  Funny, I heard black lace thighs from the start, but somehow heard carapace shell as "carrot paste shell."

Poetic and wistful song, like many of theirs.  Never quite got the curiosity over Mike Piazza's sexual orientation, but the whole elopement thing is beautiful.
