In the old NYT forums...in the Middle East forum, a lady poster explained it to me;

"Dead terrorists do not kill anyone"

"Killing your enemies, if it's done badly, increases their numbers."

That was my favorite quote from the Iraq War aftermath.  I've lost track of the original source.  A smart analyst.

Suleimani was powerful, but had already set up proxy forces loyal to Iran and had done much of the organizational work that can be continued.  His martyrdom might be of a more use to Iran than his continued leadership.  And nobody does martyrdom like the Shiites.

One advantage Iran has is they know that Trump and the US people don't want another ME war.  Iran effectively took down Jimmy Carter and no doubt they are considering ways to thwart a Trump 2nd term.  Some kind of warfare with the US probably isn't a great way of doing it.  But jacking oil prices up to US recession levels would certainly be on their agenda.  Minor warlike skirmishes, another hit on the Saudi oil fields, disrupting shipping in the Persian Gulf.  Iran has options.

And if the US hits Iran, US troops in Iraq and Afghanistan are available targets (not to mention US troops in some -stans).
Things could get ugly.  Could be a lull until the Summer/Fall when the US election campaign is well underway ...

I bet you blame Iran for that.

Try Russia.

You are blaming Russia before any information is out?

I'm suggesting that they are among the suspects.

Do you have the slightest comprehension what dropping an H-bomb on a city of millions of people would unleash?

Yes.
They're marching in the streets wanting us dead...and will get their way unless they're stopped.
You/we could always try conventional bombs/missiles first, see if that works.
Better stock up on fuel, Iran is gonna block all the shipping.

Iran is coming for us all, you first it seems.
Firing ballistic missiles already.

And shooting down civilian flights, apparently.

If you are Iran and looking to solidify general support for war against the U.S., shooting down a commercial flight and then blaming the U.S. for it would be a good start.  If so, they're pretty sloppy in their setup, using a SAM that could only have come from near the airport.

Photographs of the crash site taken at first light by a number of news agencies appear to show sections of wreckage marked with incised shrapnel damage similar to that caused by an anti-aircaft missile.

Sounds like bullshit.  An engine on fire, the crew would be able to communicate with the ground and start setting up an emergency landing.  You wouldn't suddenly plunge from 8000 feet into the ground.  An, as noted above, experts have been looking at photos and spotting right away the telltales of missile damage.

Not much of a missile attack even by Hezballah standards. Maybe if the US troops were gathered and attacking the sites directly, some damage would have occurred. Too bad they did not have attack drone technology in the 30's.

He didnt pick a fight - he got a result

-------

First I am hearing, from loose-lipped Andrew Yang of all people

- that Trump was presented a number of options by his military people and chose the most extreme.  That this extreme proposal was presented only as a means to get Trump to choose something lesser - yet he chose Curtain #1.

Go, Yang,  If you are right, you broke key news.

Wait til they start firing nukes around in 1-3 years time.
Then the real 'fun' will start.

What makes you think anyone is going to start “firing off nukes?”

Why do you think everyone else in the world is bent on national suicide?

This is what happens when countries, airlines, people think places like Iran are great and 'normal' ones to deal with, live in, study in, travel to.

US has been at war with Iran since 1979!   it was stated on my tv last night.

Afghanistan...'Rambo 3' shows.
Iran...'Not Without My Daughter' [the true story of American Betty Mahmoody and little daughter] shows all.
What are people even doing setting foot in Iran/Ayatollahland?

The flower of Aussie womanhood academic for example... if only she'd never gone there.
Her life is over, terrorised and tortured, how long can one live on mouse droppings.
Totally over now, after this latest 'war with Iran'.
No hope, she will surely die a slow, miserable, lonely death in Iran's horrid prison.

It's Iran.
Exactly why Mr Pompeo said that Iran will never be getting nukes "on our watch". But, with Trump's "our watch" likely gone at the next election it will be Ms Pelosi ilk running "The US Dept of War"...and Iran will be nuke-armed for sure and certain.
Small nuke bombs in backpacks being let off in US cities...the suicide bombers waltzing into America over porous borders...the 'open borders' lot to blame.
And components smuggled in via other means, boats, mail etc.
You know, Iran, alleged sponsor of terrorism.
