Trump has repeatedly sought budget cuts to the CDC and the National Institutes for Health.

Congress resisted that, and the 2020 budget includes $8 billion for the CDC, $1.4 billion more than Trump’s budget request. It also includes $41.7 billion for the NIH, $7.5 billion more than Trump’s budget request.

Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren tweeted that after the Ebola outbreak, Congress “invested to prevent pandemics like coronavirus. Donald Trump tried to cut that funding.”

Schumerian eloquence....

Quote
On Wednesday, Dershowitz argued that even if Trump sought a quid pro quo with Ukraine, it would not rise to the level of impeachment. He said, “If a president does something which he believes will help him get elected in the public interest, that cannot be the kind of quid pro quo that results in impeachment.”

“What a load of nonsense,” Schumer said as he addressed reporters. “By Dershowitz’s logic, President Nixon did nothing wrong in Watergate. He was just breaking into the [Democratic National Committee] to help his reelection, which of course is in the public interest, according to Dershowitzian logic.”

“The Dershowitz argument frankly would unleash a monster, more aptly it would unleash a monarch,” Schumer added.

The concrete hadn't set.

I know you can get those neurons firing if you just try.  As someone who's done a bit of concrete work and construction work in my youth, let me ask you:  what do contractors do, when the concrete isn't set and there's a vertical structure of some kind?

This is what happens when you get government awarding contracts to the lowest bidder and not the bidder who is most qualified.  This is very similar to the stupidity in Puerto Rico, when they at first brought in an electrical contractor from Montana which had zero experience with the technical demands of the PR power grid.

Or the privateers and rip-off artists who flocked to Iraq after the US gov't decided to privatize the war under W Bushleaguer.

What stands out in my mind as an illustrative example is the US soldiers who got electrocuted in the showers because some US contractor didn't bother grounding the circuits.  Just a typical example of profiteering and fraud.   i'm always amazed how many businesses rip off the gov't.  But I guess when you are partly selected for your contacts that you can be assured your fraud will not be noticed.

The country is so polarized some are outraged by the destruction of terror general and his aid with no collateral damage. What part of 'death to America" don't they understand?

What part of "assassination is illegal under US law" do you not understand?

What part of "there was no imminent threat" do you not understand?

What part of "there was collateral damage, both immediately and subsequently" are you failing to grasp? We KILLED a top general of our ALLY, not just Iran's general!

What part of "if we open up the Pandora's Box of assassination of foreign leaders and generals, then all of ours are suddenly vulnerable as are our citizens, who travel abroad far more abundently than theirs do" has escaped your attention?

This is not how we do business and if we start doing business that way it will cost us far more than it gains us.

Speaking of Trump, the military, and atrocities... he's preparing to roll back restrictions on the use of landmines.

I look forward to Kid, Luee, and Bambi explaining why this is somehow good for the US.

I’m not sure what you’re referring to but as the late Howard Baker famously asked, “What did the President know and when did he know it?”

In contrast with Trump legal team, Justice Department lawyer says House can impeach over defied subpoenas

I know a lawyer who is likely to lose his job.

Quote
A Justice Department lawyer said Thursday in federal court that the House can impeach a president over ignored subpoenas, a noted contrast to what lawyers for President Donald Trump are arguing at his Senate impeachment trial this week.

Asked by a federal judge what the House can do to enforce its subpoenas, Justice Department lawyer James Burnham said without hesitation that the House can use its impeachment powers, among other options, like withholding appropriations.

Quote
Alan Dershowitz, a member of President Trump's legal team, cited Harvard Law Professor Nikolas Bowie as a scholar who supports the argument that abuse of power doesn't warrant impeachment. Bowie told CNN's Anderson Cooper and Jeffrey Toobin that Dershowitz is wrong.

Oops.
