Y'all are so lucky you are a power, and have Trump as your leader.

Treat China like the bully it is

NEW DELHI – In clear reprisal for Canada’s U.S.-sought arrest of the Huawei founder’s daughter, China has detained two Canadians on charges of undermining its national security but has shied away from taking any action against the United States. This is in keeping with Beijing’s record of acting only against the weaker side, even if it happens to be a U.S. ally.

For example, when the U.S. installed its Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-missile system in South Korea, China used its economic leverage to retaliate against South Korea but not against the U.S. The heavy-handed economic sanctioning of South Korea in 2017, partially extending into this year, illustrated Beijing’s use of trade as a political weapon.
Similarly, after U.S. President Donald Trump in March signed the Taiwan Travel Act, which encourages official visits between the U.S. and the island, China staged war games against Taiwan and bribed the Dominican Republic and Burkina Faso to break diplomatic ties with Taipei. The U.S., however, faced no consequences.

Now, while intensifying a punitive campaign against Canada, Beijing has adopted a tempered approach toward Washington, although Canadian authorities arrested Meng Wanzhou at the behest of U.S. prosecutors for alleged bank fraud related to Iran-sanctions violations.
In fact, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has bent over backward to emphasize that, while confrontation hurts the U.S.-China relationship, cooperation benefits both countries.
Such is the Chinese effort to mollify the power behind Meng’s arrest that, in recent days, Beijing has made trade-related concessions to help defuse tensions with Washington.

More importantly, Trump has shown how active U.S. pressure on China, as opposed to imploration or admonition, can yield concessions. Without the U.S. withdrawing its 10 percent tariffs on $250 billion worth of Chinese goods, Beijing has begun lifting, following the Buenos Aires talks, its restrictions on imports of American food, energy and cars.

These restrictions had been placed in retaliation for the U.S. imposition of 10 percent tariffs. The U.S. threat to increase tariffs from 10 percent to 25 percent and possibly extend them to all imports from China forced Beijing’s hand.

The U.S. threat to increase tariffs from 10 percent to 25 percent and possibly extend them to all imports from China forced Beijing’s hand.
This underscores that China respects strength and resolve. It is also a pointer on how other powers should seek to deal with China on a regular basis so as to improve the bully’s behavior.

When a nation pursues an accommodating approach toward Beijing, an emboldened China only ups the ante. Deference to China usually invites bullying, while standing up to it draws respect and a readiness to negotiate and shore up cooperation.

If Trump surrounds himself with such good people (defined by the West Wing as well qualified, patriotic, and dedicated to public service) then why does Trump keep firing the inspectors general whose job it is to make sure those good people are doing their jobs and not abusing their positions for personal gain?

Four in two months?  What is Trump hiding?

Couldn’t be that maybe his people are not so good...?

It is sad that lawyers are no longer respected.

Many great men from history were lawyers, including James Madison, and Abraham Lincoln.

People who study hard for years should be respected, and many lawyers throughout history have been great men.

There is a movie starring Paul Newman about a young man who becomes a lawyer, "The Young Philadelphians."

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053462/

And right now we need good lawyers more than ever.

The ACLU is fighting against things such as putting children in cages, and just locking up people for no reason, etc, etc, etc, and we need the ACLU now more than ever. We need to end this prison mentality where they think they can just lock everyone up. And one really horrible thing is that they say that because people are not American citizens then they do not have the same rights as an American, and they use that to justify taking away someones human rights, and to break up families, and to do other bad things. Let me tell you that all men are created equal by God. And all human beings have human rights given by God our creator. We need good lawyers to fight for the rights of all human beings and for justice for all men.

Salute,

Tony V.

It is sad that lawyers are no longer respected.

There are lawyers who are respected and lawyers who are viewed with great disdain, Tony.

That they have graduated with a higher level degree and then passed a difficult test to attain their title is worthy (though with variations among the institutions and majors for how hard they had to have worked).

But as individuals, they are no more worthy of respect than any other profession! It is what they do with it that gets them respect or disrespect. I have a hard time seeing that as a bad thing.
