New research rewrites history of when Covid-19 took off in the U.S. — and points to missed chances to stop it

New research has poured cold water on the theory that the Covid-19 outbreak in Washington state — the country’s first — was triggered by the very first confirmed case of the infection in the country. Instead, it suggests the person who ignited the first chain of sustained transmission in the United States probably returned to the country in mid-February, a month later.

The work adds to evidence that the United States missed opportunities to stop the SARS-CoV-2 virus from taking root in this country — and that those opportunities persisted for longer than has been recognized up until now.

“Our finding that the virus associated with the first known transmission network in the U.S. did not enter the country until mid-February is sobering, since it demonstrates that the window of opportunity to block sustained transmission of the virus stretched all the way until that point,” the authors wrote in the paper. The paper has been posted to a preprint server, meaning it has not yet been peer-reviewed or published in a journal.

WSJ rips Trump for ‘hurting the country’ by ‘debasing’ the presidency: ‘Ugly even for him’

“Donald Trump sometimes traffics in conspiracy theories—recall his innuendo in 2016 about Ted Cruz’s father and the JFK assassination—but his latest accusation against MSNBC host Joe Scarborough is ugly even for him,” the newspaper noted. “Mr. Trump has been tweeting the suggestion that Mr. Scarborough might have had something to do with the death in 2001 of a young woman who worked in his Florida office when Mr. Scarborough was a GOP Congressman.”

“There’s no evidence of foul play, or an affair with the woman, and the local coroner ruled that the woman fainted from an undiagnosed heart condition and died of head trauma,” The Journal noted.

So Trump built a booming economy.  But when you ask how, you get zero details.

Just like when folks on the Right would whine that Obama was ruining the country, and I'd ask how and get absolutely nothing in return.   Out of 10 Obama Ruination folks I asked, only one gave an answer, and that was that O's executive orders were unconstitutional.  I pointed out that executive orders were fairly standard, and asked which of them had harmed the country, but then they weren't playing details and facts with me.  They had caught on to my game of rational discourse and factual debate.

So Trump's we built a booming economy once and can do it a second time appears to be just an empty slogan with no substance.  Imagine that.  Or maybe Trump has another secret plan to bring back coal and manufacturing jobs, which was a key of his initial plan to build a booming economy.

My early/mid childhood was in Wichita.  A teenage boy was hanging squirrels and pets from tree branches a few blocks away (Dennis, warming up,  working out neglectful mom issues),  the Koch family kids were building their empires,  John Birchers were running about,  and people were fighting school integration.  Twelve blocks from our house,  a KC-135 Stratotanker crashed,  taking out a city block and killing 30 people.   Interesting times,  and I later came to understand my parents choosing to move away.
