Not fiction,
Walking down the sidewalk and Igraine says... I think that was Gay Talese that we just passed.
The dapper gentleman turned to profile. I recognized the nose. Yup. But she was already gone.
She sidled up and waited till the conversation with the Maitre D had ended and said "Excuse me, are you gay?" (capitalization for comedic effect in that she meant Gay, but right as it came out of her mouth she knew that this could be trouble.)
No need to worry, in that she knew Mr. Talese. They had worked together (after a fashion) in 2014 as he was updating a book he had written about the Ironworkers who built the Verrazano Bridge 50 years earlier.
We had a pleasant time catching up and whatnot. I was introduced to his wife Nan. They are a lovely couple. It was one of those "NY Stories" that writers write about. (I'm certain Mr. Talese is, at this very moment, pondering the possibilities of the single question I allowed myself to ask.
And now, as with all NY moments. This one has come to its natural conclusion.
