The people who Australia had living on islands were resettled to the USA, and Australia has turned away some people, but hopefully the Australians welcome the refugees from Ukraine. Australia is a good, safe place for the refugees from Ukraine.

The Conservative govt elected in 2013 put a stop to the people smuggling boats 'taxi service' from Indonesia, Sri Lanka etc...towed back the boats...well not the boats that had holes punched in them at sea, engines deliberately disabled [the people-smugglers having departed, but not before ringing '1800NAVY' distress call.....but new, aircon, special orange capsule boats towed by HMAS navy ships.
The people in offshore detention centres arrived after the internationally announced, line in the sand, "no more resettlement" deadline.
Obama did a swap deal with the Aust govt before he left office...the detained for some US inmates.
Trump honoured the deal, very reluctantly.
As I remember it not all the detainees wanted to go to America. Some of the ones who went were writing back telling the others not to go, as in America they had to work, ...no free welfare cash for life...no free houses etc. LOL
Here in California we put our immigrants to work in the fields with the United Farm Workers, it is not easy for our immigrants, they have to work hard. We are lucky and we have unions, my ancestors worked hard without unions, they wished they had unions during the Great Depression, etc. Some people can make a good living from labor though, and the construction workers can earn good money working with the unions. The truck drivers are making $110,000 per year, the immigrants are happy if they can drive trucks. But, yes, some immigrants work very hard in the USA.
The secret in the USA is to be able to do a job that you love, like Hugh Hefner, Hugh Hefner had a great life, and he enjoyed his job. But, the immigrants cannot just come to America and start a magazine. Hugh Hefner was an educated American. Some immigrants succeed, but many are living with 6 people in a 1 bedroom apartment.
Some immigrants work together as a team and help each other, and when a new person shows up they set them up with a job or a business and they help the person to succeed in the USA. But, if you do not have a support system of people trying to help you to succeed then it can be very hard. It is easy if you have a network and if you just show up and they just set you up in business, but if you are poor and if you do not have a wealthy network then the USA can be very hard.
For the poor who do not have a wealthy network, we have Kiwanis International and other aid groups to help them. And we have labor unions, we are lucky to have labor unions to help people.
