People being arrested violently by the cops were people who'd been violent to the cops.
Said people totally in breach of the health orders, mask laws, and thinking they could march thru the streets maskless with Covid Delta rife in the community, kicking cars, holding cities to ransom traffic wise...and creating super spreader events by their close proximity to other maskless protesters.

Took the cops in Melb 4 days to stop the rioters...who returned every morning for more.
Cops really got after them with rubber bullets etc on day 4.
No more rioting.

You ask people nicely to go home that their protest is illegal...they take no notice.
You ask them again...same result.
Can't be having cities being held to ransom by violent protesters.

Well,  it can,  but we'd be twiddling our thumbs for sixty million years while we wait for shrubbery and dead people to turn into oil.  This whole chat has two different definitions of adaptation.   The kind where you haphazardly react to one crisis after another and the other kind where you reduce crises by predicting and planning for them.  History demonstrates which type is cheaper.   But,  sure,  REdward,  go buy that Louisiana beachfront property.  The ocean knows exactly how to "adapt" to a melting Greenland ice sheet.

There are ways to leverage your coal mines to be part of your national energy system, employing the miners and leaving the coal unburnt and in the ground. You are slow down under, but you will get there like it or not.

Zero-emissions means no camp fires...no jet engines,...

The goal is net zero CO2 not zero emissions.   If you burn campfire wood from a sustainable woodlot,  there is no CO2 rise because new growth for the next crop absorbs it.  If a jet engine burns plant derived kerosene,  same basic idea.   The point is to phase out fossil fuels, whose use liberates carbon that was sequestered underground over millions of years.   One good start is shifting your energy sources and economy,  so you don't have to sell brown coal to China to make ends meet.   Which in turn motivates China to accelerate their shift away from coal.

This year the 6th edition of the IPCC put CO2 emissions at 36 billion tons.

If anyone was serious about reducing CO2  in the last 55 years we would have a carbon tax by now.

What we do have is the power to adapt to climate change.
