The USA operated on tariffs on imports up until the first World War, and we built our interstate highway system with tariffs on imports. And we may not be able to control the companies and where they do business, but we do control our ports. And we can invest in ports in Mexico, etc.

I support high tariffs on imports, and low taxes for Americans.

Salute,

Heres what the bill would fund:

Funding for Roads and Bridges: The bill calls for investing $110 billion for roads, bridges and major infrastructure projects. Thats significantly less than the $159 billion that Biden initially requested in the American Jobs Plan. Included is $40 billion for bridge repair, replacement and rehabilitation, according to the bill text. The White House says it would be the single, largest dedicated bridge investment since the construction of the interstate highway system, which started in the 1950s.

Money for transit and rail: The package would provide $39 billion to modernize public transit, according to the bill text. Thats less than the $85 billion that Biden initially wanted to invest in modernizing transit systems and help them expand to meet rider demand.

Broadband upgrade: The bill would provide a $65 billion investment in improving the nations broadband infrastructure, according to the bill text. Biden initially wanted to invest $100 billion in broadband. It also aims to help lower the price households pay for internet service by requiring federal funding recipients to offer a low cost affordable plan, by creating price transparency and by boosting competition in areas where existing providers arent providing adequate service. It would also create a permanent federal program to help more low income households access the internet, according to the White House fact sheet.

Upgrading airports, ports and waterways: The deal would invest $17 billion in port infrastructure and $25 billion in airports to address repair and maintenance backlogs, reduce congestion and emissions near ports and airports and promote electrification and other low carbon technologies, according to the White House. It is similar to the funding in Bidens original proposal.

Electric vehicles: The bill would provide $7.5 billion for zero and low emission buses and ferries, aiming to deliver thousands of electric school buses to districts across the country, according to the White House. Another $7.5 billion would go to building a nationwide network of plug in electric vehicle chargers, according to the bill text.
Improving power and waterways: The bill would invest $65 billion to rebuild the electric grid, according to the White House. It calls for building thousands of miles of new power lines and expanding renewable energy, the White House said. It would provide $55 billion to upgrade water infrastructure, according to the bill text. It would replace lead service lines and pipes so that communities have access to clean drinking water, the White House said. Another $50 billion would go toward making the system more resilient, protecting it from drought, floods and cyberattacks, the White House said.

Environmental remediation: The bill would provide $21 billion to clean up Superfund and brownfield sites, reclaim abandoned mine land and cap orphaned gas wells, according to the White House.

No, Tony, tariffs did not pay for the highway system. Taxes on gas and other items did.

Infrastructure bill vote tonight

Congrats to Nancy for getting it to the line

and twisting arms, both right and left, R & D to get the infrastructure bill passed.

She is a helluva Speaker.

But fuck the squad, those phony self-serving progressive pieces of shit, who couldn't get everything they thought they were entitled to, when they were entitled to it, so they voted against the bill and the interests and needs of their constituents.

Since I cant get everything I want, you get nothing.

How pragmatic of them.

FUCK "EM

and not in a good way.

Hopefully the economy stays strong, inflation unwinds and the Dems now have key legislation to brag about/ run on in '22.

Quote from: bankshot1, post: 4724364, member: 9

There may be hiring, as companies gear up to dig holes, order equipment etc. Its marketing for Dems in '22 . "We promised we would get it done for you, and we got it done for you. You can trust us"

Biden should print up signs and post them on construction sites that reads:

"This project was financed by the 2021 Joe Biden Infrastructure Bill"

start marketing the win Joe and tell people how they will benefit.

turn this into '22 and '24 votes

I think the squad's votes were protest votes, only, and had the bill been in danger of not passing they would have voted for.

Their objection wasn't to what wasn't in the bill, but to its happening before the BBB got passed, as had previously been agreed to.

Oh so their vote was a sham, and their political calculus was not a principled stand, but rather, "we" have nothing to lose.
So lets play to our base, with mock outrage and mock courage and vote no, but take the money as if we voted yes.

They're hypocritical cowards.

Who will probably show up at the ground breaking for the AOC exit ramp off the NY Thru Way or the Pressley MBTA turn style and take credit for their hard work and dedication.

Maybe they can represent Elba's congressional district.

LMAO

Sham?

Political.

Calculated.

I don't think it was wise, but I find it far less venal than had they intended to put the bill at risk, let alone the actions of Manchin and Sinema, or the (rest of the) Senate Republicans.

They said they would vote against it and why.

I'm glad you don't think it wise.

Judgement and wisdom are important attributes particularly given the political, economic and social stakes in this matter.

I read Cong Pressley's rationale this AM, and thought it pathetic.

Elba could use some infrastructure $$$ the post above was truncated.

Congresswoman Pressley says she refuses to choose among the options presented. But that was why she was elected, to make difficult political choices. In her opinion the best choice was for her constituents and most Americans to get nothing unless she got everything on her wish list. Life usually doesn't work like that.

Perhaps she and her squad of progressives chose the wrong profession. Santa needs elves to fulfill the dreams of little boys and little girls who know exactly what they want on Christmas morning. But Congress need pragmatists. Perhaps her constituents will reconsider her career in '22 and will elect an adult willing to act like an adult and understand how to prioritize options in a world that demands making tough choices.
