Lasting effects, that persist to present generation, seems key here. Some of my ancestors were Ukraine peasants abducted to Sweden and made agricultural slaves. But that was long ago, they blended into the general population, and reparations would be pointless. My grandpa was poor when he took a boat to America, but that was due to being an orphan. He left, age sixteen, mainly to get away from the nagging and ill-tempered aunts who were raising him.
All that is remainian of the Ukrainian in my generation is our mouths water when we hear "borscht" and we still don't see value of definite articles.
