Right on, Alaska dude

Trump wants to use his emergency powers to divert Pentagon funds to build a wall along the southern border. Defenders of the wall say it would help block undocumented immigrants and drugs from entering the United States, citing the more than 70,000 domestic drug overdose deaths in 2017 alone.

“If that’s not an emergency, 72,000 dead Americans killed by opioids and heroin in one year, I have no frickin’ idea what an emergency is,” Sen. Dan Sullivan, R-Alaska, said at the hearing.

Dan Sullivan is a dumb guy.

No, actually, it is poorly said by the Alaskan dude, Kiiid.

"In 2017, there were 70,237 drug overdose deaths in the United States."

That was all drug deaths, not just the opioids and heroin.

And it looks like the numbers in 2018 are falling off from that high.

Quote
Proponents of a border wall often claim that it would help the United States solve its opioid addiction problem by blocking heroin smugglers from Mexico. This reveals a misunderstanding of how cross-border smuggling works.

The vast majority of the drug that enters from Mexico does so through “ports of entry”—the 48 official land crossings through which millions of people, vehicles, and cargo pass every day. “Heroin seizures almost predominantly are through the port of entry and either carried in a concealed part of a vehicle or carried by an individual,” then-U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Gil Kerlikowske told a congressional committee last year. “We don’t get much heroin seized by Border Patrol coming through, I think just because there are a lot of risks to the smugglers and the difficulty of trying to smuggle it through,” he said.

“The most common method employed by Mexican TCOs [Transnational Criminal Organizations] involves transporting drugs in vehicles through U.S. ports of entry (POEs),” the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) reported in its 2016 National Drug Threat Assessment. “Illicit drugs are smuggled into the United States in concealed compartments within passenger vehicles or commingled with legitimate goods on tractor trailers,” according to the document.

Heroin is small in volume. “It’s a relatively small amount—40-50 tons, we think—of heroin that feeds the heroin epidemic in the United States,” Gen. John Kelly, then the commander of U.S. Southern Command, told a Senate committee in 2015. The amount has probably increased somewhat today, but still takes up little space: all the heroin consumed in the United States in an entire year could probably fit into two 40-foot shipping containers.

Now, imagine the contents of those containers broken up into tiny amounts and scattered across vehicles, luggage, and cargo shipments and sent through 48 land crossings, plus airports, over the course of 365 days. The difficulty explains why in 2015, the DEA reported that U.S. authorities managed to seize 6.8 tons of heroin, an amount equal to perhaps one-seventh of Gen. Kelly’s demand estimate.

So, sure, the opioid crisis is real, but the Wall does not address the crisis in a meaningful way.

Opioids are a crisis in this country. One Trump pledged to address, but hasn’t in any effective way.

If Trump sees 200 miles of wall as the solution, that (and moronic Republican Congressmen who enable his idiocy) could be the big explanation why.

Texans overwhelmingly oppose the declaration of "emergency" about the border.

Texans are not the country.

No military threat against the United States at the southern border.

Security threat...'national security'...special rules apply, or should.

Sounds intelligent and right on the money to me.
Gotta stop the drugs coming in over the southern border..."whatever it takes".

The American Action Forum has released its estimated 10 year cost to the economy of the Green New Deal:
$94 trillion or roughly $360,010 per household.

No reaction, as yet, from the " Boss".

Absolutely! And to deal with the emergency we should divert funds earmarked for rebuilding military housing for enlisted men to erect a statue to Colin Powell in a public square in Des Moines. Which would have precisely as much effect on the problem as a border wall.

Actually, it is a crisis, not an emergency. What is needed is a thought out and coordinated long term response,  not a short term band aid.

This is a great show. It's like watching Sammy the Bull Gravano testifying against John Gotti. Who else would know how a cheater, scofflaw, and con artist works than another cheater, scofflaw, and con artist?

Well, doesn't that reduce the carbon footprint? And aren't most of them Trump supporters? I don't know if that is an emergency.

After five days of cross-examination, a prosecutor, John Gleeson, elicited in re-direct examination yesterday that Mr. Gravano was obligated to tell the truth under his plea agreement.

But the defense lawyers, Albert J. Krieger and Anthony M. Cardinale, suggested in additional cross-examination that the witness would do and say anything to avoid spending the rest of his life in prison.

"My major concern was to turn my life around," Mr. Gravano repeated in his soft, slightly hoarse voice. "Get away from what I was doing was my major concern."

"You're just looking for a new, a new version of Sam Gravano to be visited upon this world, a person who doesn't care about money, doesn't care about anything, just wants this new type of person to be seen by the world?" asked Mr. Krieger.

"I didn't say that I didn't care about money," Mr. Gravano responded. "I didn't say that I didn't care about the time. I said that's not my major concern and this is not why I signed this agreement."

Doesn't this seem exactly like what we are hearing, today?
