Woodward reports new details on Russia's election meddling, writing that the NSA and CIA have classified evidence the Russians had placed malware in the election registration systems of at least two Florida counties, St. Lucie and Washington. While there was no evidence the malware had been activated, Woodward writes, it was sophisticated and could erase voters in specific districts. The voting system vendor used by Florida was also used in states across the country.

I'll walk you through this:

Exactly why you refresh people's memories and boost her book sales.

Woodward doesn't drive voting.  Never has.

That's not how these things work.  Woodward helps frame a narrative and change perceptions -- or in this case maybe firm up the perception.   This trickles through to how the rest of the media portrays Trump and the questions he is faced with.  Everybody knows Woodward is always well-sourced, so they trust his writings.
Any media shift and re-emphasis due to Woodward will indeed trickle through into votes.

Just for instance, how does Trump keep downplaying Russian election interference when Woodward cites Russian malware embedded in some Florida voting systems?
It will have an effect ...

But more importantly, the book puts the focus back on his disastrous response to the Virus as Trump has been trying to talk economy and lawnorder.  Trump can't really afford a week or two wasted rehashing all that went wrong with the epidemic.
And that's one of the challenges Woodward's book poses.

On Trump downplaying the Virus:

White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said the president’s words to the public were designed to express confidence and calm at a time of insurmountable challenges.

Somehow China managed to surmount a much bigger virus threat with a lot less lead time.  Two months of lockdown was all it took.  Followed by two months of careful gradual reopening.  Was a largely normal Summer here the past three months.

One day in America now has more confirmed cases than all of China outside of Wuhan/Hubei Province.  Two days of infections in the US roughly equals China's entire outbreak.

Woodward’s book is his second on the Trump White House. The first, published in 2018, portrayed Trump in an unflattering light, and the president fumed at staff that he was not interviewed for it, according to two former White House officials and Republicans close to the White House. They were not authorized to speak publicly about private conversations and discussed the matter on condition of anonymity.

Trump was convinced that had he talked to Woodward, he could have led to a more favorable depiction in the book, according to the officials. Trump had always held Woodward in high regard — he considered the journalist as the biggest star in the field — and told aides that he insisted on being interviewed if Woodward were to write again, the officials said.

Trump still doesn't understand how stupid he is.
