AstraZeneca will resume its Covid-19 vaccine trial in the US
From CNN's Maggie Fox

Drugmaker AstraZeneca will resume the trial of its experimental coronavirus vaccine in the United States, which has been on hold since September.

The company said the US Food and Drug Administration authorized the restart Thursday after reviewing all of the global safety data and concluding it was safe to resume. The trial had already resumed in other countries.

Hugely normal life here.

One reason that social scientists find for people accepting totalitarian governments is the ongoing promise of social stability and order.

Real democracy is messy and easily reverts or falters.   It seems least chaotic in nations that are smaller and more homogeneous, like Denmark.   Makes me wonder if the US will eventually break up into smaller balkanized units,  some democratic,  some more totalitarian, maybe even a theocracy in the Bible Belt.

Ask Stephen King. Or just read "The Stand".

There is something to be said about collectivist vs individualistic societies.  Collectivist societies have a baked-in advantage to dealing with public health crisis ... see China / Japan / South Korea.

But you can also look at Germany or Canada and see how they're handling this crisis better.

America is the extreme end of the individualist society.  So it's expected for America to have a harder time BUT MAYBE this is a time for America to look in the mirror and re-examine its extreme individualist bent.  I mean there have been other times... any number of economic downturns could've served as a warning that putting self interest first will lead to the greater bad.  But this is what you get when you ignore warning signs.

No the US has a non-scientific oaf as leader. No masks, superspreader rallies, and packed in shoulder to shoulder. Also the unconscionable opening of schools. Business comes first over lives put at risk.

Old news by now - but LET THEM PRAY!

Nothing stopped them from praying.

If their deity exists as they claim that deity exists, then He is everywhere and so is prayer.

And if He functioned the way most of them believe He does, then they wouldn't get sick.

Speak as you wish, worship as you wish.

When we all get to heaven
What a day of rejoicing that will be
When we all see Jesus
We'll sing and shout the victory

Shinbone Star, huh?
I just re-watched Liberty Valence Wed night.
I really like Coburn's sneering Liberty.

Summer 2019 Shanghai and much of China put multiple security cameras at nearly every intersection.  You know the newfangled facial recognition type.  Kind of unsettling and the first time a policy made me think maybe my time might be up here.  It's funny because the increased use of cameras in the US seems useful for catching criminals and reining in police misbehavior, but here it seems more sinister.

While China has problems and challenges, at least the gov't and people took action and the virus was eliminated.  I like how there is still a sense of vigilance -- especially concerning a possible seasonal re-outbreak in winter  -- but the virus hasn't been here in roughly 6 months.*

* The virus is persistent and highly transmissible, and exceptions include a few border outbreaks (NE and NW), a minor Beijing interlude, foreign arrivals  and a recent dozen cases in Qingdao.

Or emigrate.

I've seen bloggers refer to Ferengi as Republicans from outer space.   The analogy seems sound,  though (full disclosure)  I only followed the first two series (and a few eps of Voyager) in any regular way.

The Stand -- thanks,  Uno, you aren't the first to suggest I read that lengthy novel.   I like some King,  but he's a little long-winded for my taste.

Or finally watch the 90s version with Gary Sinise.

I wondered if we were veering off-topic but I guess any story with Randall Flagg isn't really that far removed from Donald Trump.   And Kid will probably Iggy me again for saying that,  provided he knows who that iconic character is.
