America - Land of the Pricy, Home of the Mercenary
Any US troops who die in Saudi Arabia are not dying for their country or to keep us free. They're dying for money - and not getting their share of it, either.
"Bring the troops home!" promised Donald Trump.
We have 228,000+ folks overseas as of Sept. 2019 (per the DoD). 166 countries. (I excluded US protectorates and territories.)
Hey, it's down, right? It was 275,000+ in Dec. 2016, in 174 countries. Sooo much better!
Except that it is a lie.
Between the September 2017 DoD report and the December 2017 DoD report, what they were reporting changed from "Counts of Active Duty and Reserve Service Members and APF Civilians" to "Number of Military and DoD Appropriated Fund (APF) Civilian Personnel
Permanently Assigned."
The number overseas in the September 2017 report was ~291,000.
The number overseas in the December 2017 report was ~218,000. The quoted segment was added for that report for the first time:
Note: The DMDC data only reflects personnel who are permanently assigned for duty at these locations. The table does not include personnel on temporary duty, or deployed in support of contingency operations.

Conservative Rep. Justin Amash (I-Mich.), who until recently was a Republican, responded to Trump’s remarks in a tweet, saying, “He sells troops.”
“Saudi Arabia is paying us for [our troops]. We have a very good relationship with Saudi Arabia,” Trump said. “I said, listen, you’re a very rich country. You want more troops? I’m going to send them to you, but you’ve got to pay us. They’re paying us. They’ve already deposited $1 billion in the bank.
“We are going to help them, but these rich countries have to pay for it. South Korea gave us $500 million… I said, ‘You gotta help us along. We have 32,000 soldiers in South Korea protecting you from North Korea. You’ve gotta pay.'”
