My hope is that we can have a serious discussion about this.

One issue biologists talk about is something called herd immunity.  Basically,  how do enough healthy people get CV19 that our species enters into a normal equilibrium of resistance with the virus that we have with other influenza viruses,  while protecting vulnerable segments of the population like over-60s with pre-existing ailments.  A good start is to avoid actions that spread the virus while you may be incubating it but asymptomatic.  It's all common sense stuff,  as we've chatted about here.   If you are over 60 and have anything that compromises your immune system,  respiratory problems,  any history of encephalitis or other inflammatory diseases, any major cardio problems,  then yes, social distancing is quite sensible.

https://www.realclearscience.com/articles/2020/03/03/how_to_build_behavioral_herd_immunity_against_covid-19_111309.html

This had some useful thoughts on the topic.

The president has been blocking this annual intelligence report, which was going to reiterate what it said last year - the United States is not prepared for a global pandemic.

I think folks are mistaken when they think "being Presidential" is a big tide turner.  People vote their reality.

I think there are definitely a good deal of folks out there who have tired of Trump's shtick.  Tired of the endless drama and confrontations,  Tired of the denials of science, truth.  Tired of media bashing and conspiracy hugging.
Folks that yearn for smooth sailing.  Folks who want to cancel the reality Presidency, just tired of Trump.

And katrinavirus just underscores the incompetence that has been on display but wans;t significantly harmful before.

Centrists, huh? Come for the money, stay for the racism.

One couple I talked to in an airport while our flight was delayed and gates changed were from NC and were early 60's.   Very nice people who made a bad choice.  They regretted that Trump was constantly acting like a jerk.  Not racist, the guy even helped an Iranian woman find her gate, when she barely spoke English and had little clue where she should be.  He was gone about 10 minutes helping the woman (I found it strange that a middle-aged Iranian woman would be traveling by herself with very little English).

And this was 2.5 years ago in the early days of Trump.
I really think the Trump barrage of nonsense and dysfunction has turned off a swath of independent/moderate voters.  That's what Biden is counting on.

An isolationist America first policy essential to a neocon agenda cripples a nations ability to lead or even follow an effective global response to an international crisis.

A trump led enterprise is once again a bitch bent over to a higher power, this time as opposed to  his casinos in bent over for a gaming commission or his “university” or “charitable foundation” bent over in front of a higher court unfortunately that enterprise is now the United States.

Not racist, but ok with racist policies of the President is.. racist.

You don’t have to wave a confederate flag or scream epithets to be racist.
I’ve acquaintances who are the nicest people you’d ever want to meet and they’re racist as fuck... but they don’t know it. These were fellow parents at the National Cathedral School for Girls  and St. Albans School. Very powerful, wealthy and influential folks.

Tony,

The word marmalade actually came from the curative effects of oranges.   A compote of oranges and rinds was given to Marie Antoinette when she was sick.   It was called "Marie malade" (literally "Marie sick") and then got shortened to marmalade.

Freak.

Haha.   Kind of a cool fact,  n'est-ce pas?  Marie was quite the trendsetter.  Today's GOP has learned much from her "let them eat cake" philosophy.

Except the word marmalade was around for a few centuries before Marie Antoinette.  And apparently derives from Portuguese.  And originally was made of quince.

Josh,  great article on herd immunity - thanks!

Here's a bit on what flattening the curve means...

https://www.dailykos.com/story/2020/3/9/1925933/-Our-health-systems-aren-t-built-to-handle-a-national-crisis-That-s-why-these-early-days-are-vital

A 60 year old has died of CV in the county I live in. We are starting now to make decisions along the lines of the "flattening the curve."  Our county is the population center for a popular tourist destination region called the Black Hills, with hundreds of tourist traps including Mount Rushmore National Monument, Wind Cave National Park, the Needles, Devil's Tower nearby, Badlands National Park nearby, etc. Tourists here come from all corners of the globe as well as the USA. So, yes, it's time to start thinking about social distancing. My sympathy for people here whose livelihood depends on close contact with tourists: if tourists show up this Spring, the locals who serve face illness. If they don't, they face severe money problems.
