Fewest new deaths since April the 13th, though still 20% above that number. Akin to the number from a week ago.

I doubt it means anything, but after three days averaging 2400+ deaths per day, having a day in the 1800s is a good thing even if not a harbinger of a change.

Trump and Pence planted in some potter’s field and forgotten is the harbinger America’s waiting for. Till then it’s more of the same or worse.

A bit more...

The ratio in the US of deaths to total closed cases is down to about 36%. This is way higher than the world rate, which was just over half of where ours had been. We were in the low 40s for a good while.

The world's ratio has been between 21% and 21.44% for 13 straight days. It may be that that number is vastly inflated because there are so many people who are asymptomatic and recovering without anybody's being the wiser.

We only have one thoroughly controlled population for knowing the number of individuals, the number of cases, and the number of deaths. That's the Diamond Princess. They have had 712 cases of which 13 have ended in death, with 55 still active cases of which 7 are serious/critical. Their death rate assuming all 7 recover is 1.83%. If all 7 die, it will be 2.8%.

Everywhere else, even places like Hong Kong with 128 folks tested for every case identified, we cannot know how many have not been tested. (Hong Kong's ratio is a mere 0.39%, not the best for countries with more than 1,000 cases, but among them.)

The first manned hot-air balloon, designed by the Montgolfier brothers, took off from the Bois de Boulogne, Paris, on November 21, 1783.

I like the article, otherwise.

I’ll happily concede that ballooning is a form of flying.

Speaking of things that run on hot air and have no means of steering or control,

Alabama's governor may get the last laugh out of this. Due mainly, I suspect, to the lack of a big city, they continue to be far below anything the projections would have had them at - having not crossed 150 total deaths, let alone 300 per day! They are still getting fewer new deaths per day than the other states on this list.

You may have heard a few days ago that a study indicated that Santa Rosa, CA, had 50-85 times more cases than had been reported.

This is based on testing done on 3,300 volunteer recruited over the internet. Here's the pre-publication paper:
https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.04.14.20062463v1.full.pdf?fbclid=IwAR19GriTSdyXtrLH1wvm-B4Y2z4nD86X6G7l45iRz0ztA-Nyy266Q6OJy8s

This is simultaneously potentially very good news and not very good news.

The good news, if this is broadly applicable, is that the disease is far less deadly to those who catch it than had been feared. The bad news is that it suggests the death rate we've observed may be an accurate figure for those who have COVID-19 and become symptomatic. In the US, that rate is close to 40%, as previously noted. Internationally, on average, it's about 21%. If it were "merely" 20% of those who have already had the disease and not gotten over it, it would be roughly 145,000. That would be if we stopped getting more cases, but right now we are getting more than 100,000 new cases every 3.5 days.

The good news is that the 40% or 20% or whatever number might not hold up. Or one of Kid's magic treatments might save us. Or we'll actually work on the social distancing and masks and the like... and not open up beaches... oops! or schools... oops!

The liar in chief was at his finest on Sunday, a session I am sure Kid will laud as "presidential" and "showing leadership."

Quote
Trump continued to favorably compare the coronavirus testing situation in the US to the situation in other countries. He alleged that Democratic governors are deliberately not using testing capacity the federal government has created -- and suggested that the only governors "complaining" about testing challenges are Democrats.
"Now they're giving you the other -- it's called 'testing, testing.' But they don't want to use all of the capacity that we've created. We have tremendous capacity ... they know that, the governors know that. The Democrat governors know that. They're the ones that are complaining," he said.

Facts First: There is no evidence that any governor is deliberately not using available testing capacity. And it's not only Democratic governors who have spoken of problems and challenges with testing. Governors from both parties, and public health officials around the country, have warned that they are still unable to do the amount of testing needed to safely lift social and economic restrictions.

Republican Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and his health chief expressed frustration on Friday that testing at hospitals in the state was being impeded by a shortage of critical components.

Republican Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan said on NBC on Thursday that he believes Maryland is going to get, "in the next several weeks," to the level of testing needed, but he also said: "This has been the No. 1 stumbling block in America, the lack of availability of testing, and you really can't get to any point where you can reopen the country until, not just in my state, but across the country, until we can do much, much larger-scale testing."

Republican Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts said Wednesday that it has been "a challenge" to get all of the supplies needed to conduct tests. Peter Iwen, director of the Nebraska Public Health Laboratory, told Omaha's KETV in a story published Wednesday that supplies they need to run tests were being sent instead to labs in other states: "We're trying to compete with those people, and we're just not getting the reagents sent to us."

Democratic governors are expressing concerns similar to those of their Republican colleagues.

Democratic Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly told CNN on Thursday: "We have had a very difficult time getting access to tests and all the stuff you need to complete those tests."

"There are not enough tests being performed on any group, anywhere in the state, okay?" Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Saturday. "There are not enough tests being performed in Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Albany, North Country, Long Island, Westchester, not for prisoners, not for the black and brown population, not for health care workers, not for police officers, that's true across the board. That's why we have to bring testing to scale across the board."
No one saw this coming[/size]

CNN's script, but mostly first person quotes.

"In Pursuit of PPE" by a medical executive in Massachusetts.

An excerpt:
Quote
Hours before our planned departure, we were told to expect only a quarter of our original order. We went anyway, since we desperately needed any supplies we could get. Upon arrival, we were jubilant to see pallets of KN95 respirators and face masks being unloaded. We opened several boxes, examined their contents, and hoped that this random sample would be representative of the entire shipment.

Before we could send the funds by wire transfer, two Federal Bureau of Investigation agents arrived, showed their badges, and started questioning me. No, this shipment was not headed for resale or the black market. The agents checked my credentials, and I tried to convince them that the shipment of PPE was bound for hospitals. After receiving my assurances and hearing about our health system’s urgent needs, the agents let the boxes of equipment be released and loaded into the trucks. But I was soon shocked to learn that the Department of Homeland Security was still considering redirecting our PPE. Only some quick calls leading to intervention by our congressional representative prevented its seizure. I remained nervous and worried on the long drive back, feelings that did not abate until midnight, when I received the call that the PPE shipment was secured at our warehouse.
