This is the big news story where I live in Indian country....

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that nearly half of Oklahoma falls within an Indian reservation, a decision that could reshape the criminal-justice system by preventing state authorities from prosecuting offenses there that involve Native Americans.

The 5-to-4 decision, potentially one of the most consequential legal victories for Native Americans in decades, could have far-reaching implications for the 1.8 million people who live across what is now deemed “Indian Country” by the high court. The lands include much of Tulsa, Oklahoma’s second-biggest city.

The case was steeped in the United States government’s long history of brutal removals and broken treaties with Indigenous tribes, and grappled with whether lands of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation had remained a reservation after Oklahoma became a state.

Justice Neil M. Gorsuch, a Westerner who has sided with tribes in previous cases and joined the court’s more liberal members, said that Congress had granted the Creek a reservation, and that the United States needed to abide by its promises.

“Today we are asked whether the land these treaties promised remains an Indian reservation for purposes of federal criminal law,” Justice Neil M. Gorsuch wrote. “Because Congress has not said otherwise, we hold the government to its word.”

Muscogee leaders hailed the decision as a hard-fought victory that clarified the status of their lands. The tribe said it would work with state and federal law-enforcement authorities to coordinate public safety within the reservation.

“This is a historic day,” Principal Chief David Hill said in an interview. “This is amazing. It’s never too late to make things right.”

But Chief Justice John G. Roberts warned in a dissenting opinion that the Court had sown confusion in the state’s criminal-justice system and “profoundly destabilized” the state government’s powers in eastern Oklahoma.

“The State’s ability to prosecute serious crimes will be hobbled and decades of past convictions could well be thrown out,” Justice Roberts wrote.  “The decision today creates significant uncertainty for the State’s continuing authority over any area that touches Indian affairs, ranging from zoning and taxation to family and environmental law.”

(NYT, today)

Really interesting to see Gorsuch aligning with the liberal justices so frequently these days.

To quote Joe Biden this is a “Big Fucking Deal.”

Florida reports 120 new coronavirus deaths, a single-day record for the state
From CNN's Melissa Alonso, Rosa Flores and Sara Weisfeldt
Florida health officials on Thursday reported 8,935 new Covid-19 cases, according to data posted on the Florida Department of Health website.

The state is also reporting at least 120 Covid-19-related deaths — a new single-day record for the state. The previous high was on April 28, when 83 new deaths were reported, according to CNN's tally.

This brings the current total cases to more than 232,000, according the health department. There are now more than 4,000 Covid-19-related deaths in Florida.

This is a massive failure of leadership

Last month I was told you have to understand Gorsuch as a Western conservative.  And so his views on social issues and other issues won't line up so tidily with other conservatives.

Sonya Holt joins the ranks of the unemployed.

People - these people - just do not get it. They fail to understand that there are real world consequences for what they are saying. And the ones on this board who keep trying to create an equivalence of language that is just not there, but who do it to score points rather than because any lives matter to them, are just as bad in their own way.

I think the worst thing in that video is when these "Americans" start chanting "USA! USA!"

What? That is hardly expressing the ideals of the country.

Very sad.

https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/rudy-giuliani-called-police-absurd-135551535.html

Sacha Baron Cohen is up to something. Just over a week after pranking a far-right rally into participating in a racist singalong, the comedian reportedly tried to prank former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani during a July 7 interview at the Mark Hotel in New York City. Page Six reports that Giuliani, who also serves as a personal attorney to Donald Trump, believed he was going to be interviewed about the White House’s response to the coronavirus pandemic. The former mayor said he agreed to donate the money being offered for the interview to the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation.

Giuliani told Page Six that in the midst of the interview, which was being conducted by a female interviewer “with a professional set-up of lights and camera,” a man came storming in wearing an outrageous outfit. The former mayor told the publication, “This guy comes running in, wearing a crazy, what I would say was a pink transgender outfit. It was a pink bikini, with lace, underneath a translucent mesh top, it looked absurd. He had the beard, bare legs, and wasn’t what I would call distractingly attractive.”

So, uh, should he have lost the beard? Would that have made him more "distractingly attractive"?

Rudy. You're so far gone.

Katyal does not think Trump won much, if anything. He expects NY and Vance to move to trial pretty quickly.

tocks abruptly turned negative Thursday as fears over the economic outlook following an increase in coronavirus cases resurged. The Dow and S&P 500 wiped out their week to date gains, while the Nasdaq held higher and hit a record earlier in the morning.

The Dow sank more than 300 points, led by a more than 8% decline in shares of Walgreens Boots Alliance after the company swung to a quarterly net loss and announced additional job cuts overseas. Tech stocks that had hit record highs on Wednesday – including Amazon (AMZN), Microsoft (MSFT), Apple (AAPL), Facebook (FB) and Netflix (NFLX) – were mixed alongside the drop in the broader market. Wells Fargo (WFC) shares slid about 2% after Bloomberg Law reported the bank was preparing to cut thousands of jobs later this year, amid broad-based weakness in the financials sector.

I love reading the rationales that each days ups and downs brings, as they try to make sense of what is far more random than they would like it to be.

Humans want things to "make sense" whether they do or not.
