Oil pipelines create few longterm jobs.  Most of their jobs are in the short-term construction/excavation phase.  In fact, a lot of our petro-infrastructure is more automated than it used to be, and will continue that trend.  As it happens, transport by tanker trucks is actually MORE of a job creator than a pipeline, since you need a lot of drivers.  But that, too, will eventually be replaced by SDVs.  The real driver of good jobs in the future will be innovation-track jobs in creating advanced storage systems of solar/wind/thermal energy, smartgrids, etc.  We need imagination and smarts, not clinging to the dirty past and conjuring phantom obstacles to innovation.  Also, innovation in personal vehicles and high-speed rail will reduce the need for fossil fuels, which makes pipeline builds now rather stupid and a money-loser in the long run.

There are over 2.6 million miles of energy pipelines in the USA. Saying that the jobs created are mostly short term is like arguing building houses is just temporary work.
The union members that build pipelines have been hosed for years by Obama, Trump, and now, Biden over Keystone XL.
They see themselves as expendable by the Washington “swamp”.

Monday, January 18, 2021
The United Association of Union Plumbers and Pipefitters (UA) issued the following statement today following the news that the Biden-Harris Administration plans to rescind the permit and effectively end construction on the Keystone XL pipeline:
“In revoking this permit, the Biden Administration has chosen to listen to the voices of fringe activists instead of union members and the American consumer on Day 1. Let me be very clear: When built with union labor by the men and women of the United Association, pipelines like Keystone XL remain the safest and most efficient modes of energy transportation in the world. Sadly, the Biden Administration has now put thousands of union workers out of work.
For the average American family, it means energy costs will go up and communities will no longer see the local investments that come with pipeline construction,” said Mark McManus, General President of the United Association.
“New advancements in technology mean that these pipelines are a low-carbon method of energy transportation and a critical part of delivering affordable energy while achieving our shared climate goals. Keystone XL would not only be constructed entirely by union labor, but it would be the first pipeline fully powered by renewable energy.”
“For eight years the Obama Administration delayed and blocked a decision on Keystone XL. Then the flawed process and mismanagement of the Trump Administration led to further delays and inaction over the last four years. Now, this planned decision by the Biden Administration makes it the third White House to fail the working families of the United Association and all Americans who rely on affordable and reliable energy to power their daily lives. Decisions on energy and infrastructure, especially when jobs are at stake, can only be made when the voice of the workers is in the room. We will keep fighting for Keystone XL and any infrastructure project that creates good jobs for the Brothers and Sisters of the United Association, and to make sure our members have a seat at the table.

A smooth transition from fossil fuels to renewables is what's needed.
Biden can try to just cut off fossil fuels now, but the unemployed voters will likely not be happy.

If you hadn’t already told us where you go to get your solvents, I would wonder more about your last post.

I guessing Red goes to Findlay to get his. Quite a riverside scene in that metropolis.

It's like coal industry jobs in Australia.
The Left in Australia didn't get it...so the coal mining folk and all their friends and relatives sent ScoMo to Canberra [the capital of Australia] as Prime Minister.

Renewables are great, but fossil fuels cannot simply be switched off now.
Electric cars...lovely...run on batteries, you charge them from home or from roadside stations.
The energy provided for the charging comes from somewhere...fossil fuels atm...nuclear as well in America.
No Harvard degree needed for this one either.

The Keystone decision with Biden’s March to Open Borders is not the way to reinforce his “ unity” pledge.

Australia Day on Jan 26th.
"Invasion Day" protests there will be, complete with Black Lives Matter signs.

Black lives matter?
Really?

IT'S 10pm, the witching hour in the heart of Alice Springs, the time when trouble really starts. KFC has closed its doors, the lights from the 24-hour shop over the crossroads gleam, the cars cruise by with menace, the crowds of bush Aboriginal boys and girls, teenagers and younger, grow thick.

There they are, in the deep shadows of back alleys, parks and vacant blocks, mobiles shining in their hands as they plan their moves, and dodge and weave between the security patrols, the little ineffectual posses of youth workers from different agencies and the police vans drifting up and down the streets.

Seventy teenagers, some with their knife-blades open, converge on the lone guard: he flees.
Here's the action, at the streetlights where Stott and Todd meet: the pick-up point for grog, ganja, adventure, sex and any combination of all these.

A few steps across the council lawns the sandy riverbed stretches, and the drinking camps of the western desert communities: Papunya people, and Kintore families, the dependents of the great desert artists, fighting and shouting abuse at each other all through the night.

#####

Maybe Spain, Mexico, Italy, Germany, France, Sweden, Portugal, Nth Korea, Belarus and all the other countries bashing up Australia at the UN have some solutions...because we'd sure like to hear them.

Ban alcohol in Indigenous communities?
Tried that long ago...it was deemed 'racist'.

"Round them up, lock them up, for their own good"?
LOL, imagine that...8,9,10, teen Black children locked up "for their own good" by "big bad whitey".

The Keystone decision with Biden’s March to Open Borders is not the way to reinforce his “ unity” pledge.
Red, like so many Repos, are now concerned with "unity" after consistently ignoring Democrats for four years, from ramming a tax break through without any input from Democrats anx without following regular order to hypocritically rushing a far right SCOTUS nominee in the last couple months of a presidential term to falsely questioning the legitimacy of an election. They also seem to think "unity" means rejecting Biden's own principles and positions and adopting theirs. Fuck their definition of unity.

Black lives matter?

Vikki Campion
Daily Telegraph;

You’d describe him, if you saw him, as a young boy riding his bike at night. But he is breaching his bail conditions because he doesn’t want to go home.
If he goes home, he is assaulted. If he goes back to juvie, he is assaulted.

As he grows, he will learn that Indigenous kids like him are 22 times more likely to be in detention than non-Indigenous kids.

His mother, and all Indigenous women aged 15 and over, are 34 times more likely to be hospitalised for family violence than non-Indigenous women.

He is twice as likely to suicide as his non-Indigenous peers.

Thank God we have Zali. After a minute of silence on Australia Day, I am sure he will feel better about it all.

#####

Zali Steggall, former Olympic skier, took Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott's seat at the last election.
She's 'climate change', 'treat everyone with respect', 'environment' etc.
Tony Abbott used to go and live in Indigenous communities and work.

Biden made the pledge to Unity then killed 70,000 direct and indirect pipeline jobs and promised amnesty to millions of illegal aliens.  The most obvious group of people  to pay the price will be poorer Americans, especially minorities who made significant gains in the last four years.

While we have time to day-dream...

If Anaheim wants to be a utopia, we need more culture, we need a Barnes and Noble Bookstore ( A Samuel French Bookstore would be great but Barnes and Noble could carry the books from Samuel French, they can work out a deal ), and we need a theatre like the Pantages in Hollywood, we need an IMAX theatre by City Hall, we need more bicycle shops and the city needs to be more bicycle friendly, it would be great if Anaheim had a modern film and television studio to employ people in the Entertainment Industry, Anaheim needs more printers and publishers and can foster more writers and poets, we need piazzas like in Rome where people can socialize, and we need more public art and statues, etc, and more public landscaping, we need more parking and underground parking is the way to go, and those are just a few ideas, we can keep generating ideas, and I realize that we have fantastic places such as Pearson Park etc, and Disneyland, etc, we are blessed, but Anaheim can be much better, there is a lot of work to do if people want to keep improving Anaheim.

Also, I know we have Opera in Costa Mesa, I would like to go someday, and it would be great to have an awesome Opera house here in Anaheim, it would be cool to get some true craftsmen and amazing architects and designers, to build a really nice Opera house here in Anaheim.

We also really need to do some really great development in the Platinum Triangle Community as we develop that part of Anaheim.

And everything we build, we should seek the best architects and developers, etc. We need architecture that inspires our souls.

Salute,

Tony V.

Maybe when women are put out of qualifying for state and national teams and the Olympic teams by trans athletes they might sit up and take notice then.
Anyway, women make up their own minds.

Let me know when that happens, Bambu.

Almost 70% of women define a transwoman as a woman.

This issue has a few thorny aspects,  as in contact sports where one could have transwomen (with male skeletons and joints) colliding with cis-females with lighter bones and joints.   There is some research pointing to higher rates of serious injury from this.   So I think that might call for some regulations, especially in boxing,  football,  rugby.   There will be fairness issues,  whatever someone's politics,  and those have to addressed for each sport.

Poor bambu. He hasn't even thought of the transgender men who are going to infiltrate Aussie Rules Rugby soon enough.
