Re:  math

Just don't get rid of rote memorization of times tables.   That mental math is so handy.

Absolutely. Geometry equations as well.

And general relativity's stress-energy tensor as the source of spacetime curvature!  OK, got a little carried away there.

Risk perception is the driving force for decisions to get the vaccine.

Americans are wising up to the fact republicans are lying to them about everything.

The GOP approval is 28% support vs. 60% against. Now they’ve been condemned by cops in uniform, I’m sure their support will go up among those who want to defund the police enough to partially offset their losses from the law & order crowd.

Now the DOJ has deemed plotting to overthrow the government is not an official duty covered by executive privilege, will it make the same ruling about plotting to steal the people’s money by looting public lands and institutions and accepting kickbacks for contracts and postings?

In civilized countries, they strictly limit access to firearms. But those countries don’t have oligarchs trying to perpetuate race based slavery through a school to prison pipeline.

Real progress requires killing the GOP and its media ecosystem.

Risk perception is one factor.

What represents a greater risk, getting covid or getting a shot that may "only be 95%" effective and you get a sore shoulder?

To quote from the article, the part that Red ignored.

The problem, it’s been said, is that we live in two Americas, riven by both ideology and immunology: In blue America, vaccination rates are standing up just fine; in red America, they’re slouchy and exposed. Indeed, the latest vaccine numbers show that 17 states have now provided at least one dose to more than 60 percent of their population—and every single one of them voted for Biden in the last election. Another 16 states are struggling to reach a rate of 50 percent; all but one of those went for Donald Trump.

But there’s another, better way to think about what’s happening here: If the distribution of vaccines keeps slowing down, it’s not because America is divided but because we’re running out of people who think vaccines will save their lives.

And the ignorant and superstitious, you know core Repub voters, will suffer.

SSDD

Again to quote from the article

It certainly hasn’t helped the vaccination drive that Fox News and other right-wing outlets are sowing fear about the safety of the COVID-19 shots, and about the efforts to distribute them.

So if Red is right and perception of risk is a factor in the bifurcated vacc data, and I agree it is, how much responsibility should Fox and other partisan conspiratorial voices take in shaping that perception that is infecting and killing the dupes of the right?

From October 2018

The Republican Party has outlived its efficacy and has, in fact, become what its leader accuses the Fourth Estate of being — an enemy of the people. In order for this grand experiment in democracy to continue into the future, its politics must be allowed to evolve to meet the needs of its growing diverse populations, and that is anathema to the GOP. In order to save the nation AND the principles of conservative politics, the GOP must be destroyed.

It must go the way of Carthage. Its structure battered into bits, the rubble burned to ash, the ashes salted and sowed into the earth, never to grow again.

“Republicans aren’t just villains, they’re cowards.”

28% and sinking.

Why do republicans hate cops, the troops, work, family, and the American way of life?

Re:  math

Just don't get rid of rote memorization of times tables.   That mental math is so handy.

Absolutely. Geometry equations as well.

In math, the questions are more important than the answers. You can memorize 3 * 6 = 18, but can you explain why it is so

You can memorize that all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares, but can you tell why.

Among the biggest issues with teaching math is that so many do not teach math as it is. It is a language. Taught as a language, students learn it, but especially when that language is embedded within a context that is familiar to the student.

When a kid sees a problem such as, "Me. Brown is laying out his garden...", and that kid knows nothing about gardens, the problem becomes much harder.

Also, with American kids, if you teach them that math is how businesses take advantage of them in the market place, they start to take a real interest, as all American kids don't want someone taking their money. It makes it a whole lot easier to teach fractions, decimals, and percents once they realize these are just expressions used to fuck them over.

Hey, kid. Would you rather have 50% off, or buy one get one free? How about 70% off $100 sneakers, or 60%off  plus another 15% off those same $100 kicks?

If you don't give context, teach thinking, and teach math as a language, you are not getting the teaching of math done, IMO.
