For the assholes among us who will reject the story because it was in Daily Kos, here it is in one of JAMA's journals:

https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2789154

That's that noted left-wing rag, the Journal of the American Medical Association.

For what it is worth Ukraine is part of what my wife refers to as "used to be Poland".

A small part of it. Other parts were occupied by Czechoslovakia and Romania.

My forebears came from a shtetl in Belarus. Their US census listed their birth country. Once it said Poland, once Germany, and once Russia. The city was the same all three times.
My wife s grandfather was from Grodno, which was Russia before the Great War, Poland between wars, the Soviet Union after the war, and is Belarus now. He was sent to a Gulag for.refusing Soviet citizenship. He.was also PK, so he was lucky he was not shot. Other relatives live in an area of Poland that was Germany from the first partition through World War Ii.

All of.Europe has boundaries that were drawn for political rather than ethnic reasons and most of those countries, including especially the Baltic nations, have fairly large Russian populations and enclaves of Russians.

Lots of E Euro connections here.  My wife's maternal ancestors were all from the Crimea, part of an enclave of former Germans who were enticed to migrate to Crimea by Cathy the Great (free acres, no military conscription, other perks) and stayed there for a couple centuries until a Czar decided to void the no conscription clause, so they all left for the Dakotas.  Apparently with no prior access to weather.com.

My paternal ancestors included Swedes who migrated to the Volga regions, married Russians, then moved back to Sweden.  My father had somewhat Russian features.

First Ukraine, then Poland, and the rest of Europe...heil Vlad the new ruler of the world.
Oh the folly of Ukraine's giving up its nukes on the promise of protection.
Now look what's happened, it's a sitting duck waiting to be blown to bits...millions slaughtered.
Exactly the same as Taiwan, Australia, and every other country that doesn't have nukes ready to fire.
Absolute folly relying on promises and depending on others for protection.
Nothing is guaranteed unless one provides it oneself.

Biden admin hardening rhetoric, and sanctions now.  Way to go, Joe.

It is also time for Europe to face up to its collective disregard  for energy independence.
Germany abandoned nuclear for Russian  oil for example.
And we are all hoping Biden and the US will find the success in battling Putin that we found in the decade of the Eighties in bringing about the demise of the evil empire.
These sanctions will take a toll on us so it is high time to get back to thinking of America first and reclaim our leadership in energy production.

Gotta love coal-fired power stations.
Shovel in the coal and out comes electricity...no Russian oil and gas needed.

The Ukrainians could use him to fill sand bags or something. It would be a big blow to Russia if tuck tuck got taken off the air.

Apparently in the bambuland May 2022 federal election, "cashed up Progressives" running as Independents will be deciding who governs.
The said "cashed up Progressives" seem to mostly be left-leaning.
If true, ScoMo and the Conservative govt could well be for the high jump.

It's all true though.
Ukraine is about to find that out.

Coal-fired power is available, affordable, and reliable.
Germany and others, UK?, reliant on Russian oil and gas when WW3 is about to start?
The folly of listening to Greta- ilk.
Wonder if she'll be saying in angry tone to Russia..."How dare you"?

The largest producer of coal in Europe is Russia. By a lot.

Plenty of Aussie coal for sale...no need to buy from the Russian invaders.
Time to start boycotting "made in Russia" and "made in China"...now, today.
