My wife's maternal ancestors were all from the Crimea, part of an enclave of former Germans who were enticed to migrate to Crimea by Cathy the Great (free acres, no military conscription, other perks) and stayed there for a couple centuries until a Czar decided to void the no conscription clause, so they all left for the Dakotas. My paternal ancestors included Swedes who migrated to the Volga regions, married Russians, then moved back to Sweden. My father had somewhat Russian features.
