First the American president has long been the leader of the West. It is important that his office be given the respect it has hitherto been accorded domestically and internationally.

That stopped.

Donald Trump is barely the leader in his own White House, where staff works to get around him.

He is not even slightly the leader of the West.

He is, by his occupation of the office.

Not by this time next year...

No.

He remains "the most powerful man in the world," Bambi, but he squandered the leadership position years ago, driving it home this past year with things like his betrayal of the Kurds and his further embracing of Putin.

How am I to keep the squirrels away from the pumpkins if I can't own a military-style assault rifle?  At least the founding fathers foresaw this problem and cared enough to frame the second amendment.

BTW, RIP Terry Jones, a Python and a Chaucer scholar.

The first day of the Senate impeachment trial was spent deliberating a resolution from Majority Leader Mitch McConnell establishing the rules of the trial.

After the House managers and the President’s defense team argued their sides of the resolution, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer purposed 11 amendments:

  • Subpoena White House documents related to Ukraine, the hold on aid, specific references to Burisma and the Bidens.
  • Subpoena the State Department for documents related to Ukraine and the hold on U.S. security assistance.
  • Subpoena the Office of Management and Budget for documents related to Ukraine and the hold on U.S. security assistance.
  • Subpoena acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney.
  • Subpoena the Defense Department for documents related to Ukraine and the U.S. hold on security assistance.
  • Subpoena administration officials Robert Blair and Michael Duffey.
  • Prevent “selective admission” of evidence and to provide for appropriate handling of classified and confidential materials.
  • Subpoena former National Security Adviser John Bolton.
  • Provide that motions to subpoena witnesses or documents shall be in order after the question period in the impeachment trial.
  • Provide more response time to motions.
  • Require the Chief Justice of the United States to rule on motions to subpoena witnesses and documents.

Ultimately, all of the purposed amendments were tabled — or killed — with votes falling along party lines, except for one.

Sen. Susan Collins was the only Republican to break ranks at any point during the amendment votes, joining with all Democrats to vote against tabling an amendment that would’ve provided more response time to today's trial motions.[/size]

Barton: Have you considered some sort of rocket-propelled grenade launcher? Of course this might take out the offending squirrel and a number of pumpkins but these are the things you must consider when thinking about collateral damage and the well-armed American citizen....
