Re:  Biden and the crisis
Dang - it sure does get dicey if reins are being passed and we are still in the middle of this mess

Just the transition period - 2.5 months between early November and late January might be wild

Biden will snipe at Trump during the campaign - of what he would do - would HAVE done - concerning COVID-19 - and meanwhile Trump's policies stay in effect as we await Biden's sweeping changes

Hint - may actually change very little - after huffing about it so long.

Its the way the system is.  Biden cannot really praise Trump - has to even be careful just how bipartisan he is - during the election cycle.  (It hurt McCain in '08 - having a national crisis that needed bipartisanship)

Updated to clarify that cuts to programs intended to fight epidemics globally did not take place.

Updated to clarify that the 2018 reductions in CDC efforts referenced were a result of the anticipated depletion of previously allotted funding, not a direct cut by the Trump administration.

As for the CDC,  its funding for global outbreak management was only saved when Congress intervened and thwarted Trump's attempt to end it.   Once again,  the faithful can claim "Trump didn't do [X ]" only because wiser and saner heads prevailed.   What a thoroughly dishonest and pathetic sort of defense of an incompetent  that is!

Another look at the same report:

"We're not going back to normal"

The section about police state levels of citizen monitoring makes me uneasy.  Not sure it's worth it.

We don’t know exactly what this new future looks like, of course. But one can imagine a world in which, to get on a flight, perhaps you’ll have to be signed up to a service that tracks your movements via your phone. The airline wouldn’t be able to see where you’d gone, but it would get an alert if you’d been close to known infected people or disease hot spots. There’d be similar requirements at the entrance to large venues, government buildings, or public transport hubs. There would be temperature scanners everywhere, and your workplace might demand you wear a monitor that tracks your temperature or other vital signs. Where nightclubs ask for proof of age, in future they might ask for proof of immunity—an identity card or some kind of digital verification via your phone, showing you’ve already recovered from or been vaccinated against the latest virus strains....

Did they override a Trump veto?

The funding ran out.  Congress the approved further funding.

The article (and so many Democrats) lazily claimed as you have - and needed correction.

Not Josh or Bart's point.   Which was that Trump RECOMMENDED  cuts to the CDC.   No  one here is saying that Trump succeeded.   Wiser heads prevailed in Congress and Trump didn't interfere further - if that's the best thing you can say about a leader....

And,  get this through your head:   Trump was still proposing a budget reduction in February:

Quote
The president introduced his fiscal year 2021 budget proposal on Feb. 10, just 11 days after the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus outbreak a public health emergency of international concerns. The spending plan included a 16 percent reduction in CDC funding from the 2020 spending levels.

In fact, all of Trump’s budget proposals have called for cuts to CDC funding, but Congress has intervened each time by passing spending bills with year-over-year increases for the CDC that Trump then signed into law.

Funding ran out.

You were led by the nose by the anti-Trump media.  You though all along the CDC remained underfunded, which is not the case.

Your issue is with Trump's "allowing" Bolton to axe Bossert and a couple of others.  Trump has since been praising of some of the former staffers as their opinions of the current situation are noted.

Cant be sure with any certainty that Bossert's views would have led to earlier action on COVID-19 had he still been working for the administration.  But makes for a good opposition story.

The promise of anti-virals

Patients who were given the medicine in Shenzhen turned negative for the virus after a median of four days after becoming positive, compared with a median of 11 days for those who were not treated with the drug, public broadcaster NHK said.

I would also say that rather than just waiting for government payment$ to arrive, families should band together to bail one another out if necessary.

You could extend this to good friends as well.

This is a fine sentiment.  As for me I've been trying to patronize a lot of local places that have been shut down except for carry out.  I'm going to put on a fifty pounds during this.

I gained 5 pounds per week the first 3 weeks of voluntary isolation.
Had to switch to the fat pants I bought a few winters ago and then never needed to wear.

If you're not going to get exercise, start cutting back on food intake.  I started bike riding at night, running up and down the subway stairs, and did one day of jogging around the neighborhood.
