.054768

Latest number of deaths per confirmed case in US

Basically 1 in every 18.3

.06918 is the world number

Quite sadly 54.38% of the US deaths have been in NY/NJ

There are 40, 000 dead so far...

You should learn to do math, Kid.

Your world figure is off by a goodly bit.

And we normally express those as percentages.

But more to the point, the thing you need to be looking at is not dead to raw cases, but dead compared to recovered. The folks who are neither are not possible to evaluate.

And the world number for that is 21% and the US number is 36%, approximately. Those are both far scarier numbers. The world figure has been there for about a week. The US number has dropped the last few days.

A reminder.
Doctors and hospitals pay their bills through elective procedures paid by private insurance.
Those payments have been stopped via lockdowns to free up space for covid19 patients.
Space that, thankfully, has not proven to be needed.
So the result could be tens of thousands of furloughed health care workers.

The Wall Street Journal reports the
Mayo Clinic is cutting physician salaries by 10%. Boston Medical Center is furloughing 10% of its workforce. Cincinnati-based Bon Secours Mercy Health, with 43 hospitals and 1,000 outpatient facilities across seven states, is furloughing employees who aren’t treating coronavirus patients.

Another example of the social cost we are all paying if lockdowns continue.

The Unequal Cost of Social Distancing
Stefanie DeLuca, James Coleman Professor of Sociology & Social Policy
Nick Papageorge, Broadus Mitchell Associate Professor of Economics
Emma Kalish, PhD student in Economics

Social distancing will save lives.(i) Its economic costs are staggering. While frustrating but manageable for many people(ii), the economic fallout of social distancing is brutal for the poorest, most vulnerable and marginalized members of our society. Even looking at the issue purely in terms of lives lost, injuries sustained, and lifelong psychological damage, there are tradeoffs that we feel have not been sufficiently acknowledged.
Unemployment will lead to increases in suicide, substance abuse, domestic violence, homelessness and food insecurity. Substance abuse itself—especially the opioid crisis—has already significantly reduced life expectancy in the U.S., and that has been during a time of relative prosperity. Under the current circumstances, it is entirely possible we will see such an impact again. Domestic violence is also deadly, more so now with abusers finding themselves frustrated and at home far more than normal.
Thousands of people will die from these causes, and many more will be severely injured and traumatized for life. While these issues can be universal, they fall hardest on the poorest, most vulnerable members of our population, who we know have been the first to lose their jobs and suffer the most from these terrible problems.
Thus, a grim tradeoff is already being made between saving different lives: saving the lives of those who are most vulnerable to COVID-19 versus saving the lives of those who are most vulnerable to suicide, substance abuse, and domestic violence. Moreover, these vulnerabilities mean social distancing may be unsustainable for large swaths of the poorest Americans. As decision makers contemplate medium-term economic versus public health trade-offs, they must do so with an acknowledgement of the severely skewed nature of the costs of distancing.

It would be easier to credit your concern if you gave a loose.stinking shit about the effects of policy on health,.for instance, when it comes to repealing Obamacare or reducing funding for the types of social services intended to combat those issues.  Feel free to LOL.

Another example of the social cost we are all paying by tolerating a for profit health care system. Single payer makes more sense each and every day.

You mean the end of the for profit healthcare system?

I used to think that sound was you whistling past the graveyard but now I know it is the wind blowing through your ears.

Great thinking like Kiid’s has the country poised for and explosive next few weeks

http://www.salon.com/2020/04/19/trumps-lies-are-killing-his-supporters-as-the-coronavirus-starts-to-sweep-rural-america_partner/

The notion that there are very few cases in a given place and therefore precautions aren't necessary is exactly what allows the transformation of a low risk environment into an outbreak hotspot.

Italy was low-risk at one time, so was Iran, all of Europe, NY/NJ and Michigan, New Orleans -- gee, come to think of it, everywhere outside of China at one time ...

Probably due to the lack of leadership and clear guidance from the Trump Admin, Americans don't seem to understand that the time to take precautions is before the virus spreads in your community/region/state, not after.

As much as possible you want to prevent the first case from occurring, and if any cases occur, you want to be able to isolate and treat, contact trace and quarantine, to break the transmission chain prior to widespread infections.

My hometown Edison NJ, is highly international with a population of roughly 100K.  So far there are 627 cases in Edison.  Shanghai, with more than twice the population of New Jersey, has had a roughly equal 638 cases (and I think more than 20% of those were found at the airport, so those people didn't enter the city, but could have infected others who did).  There's a lesson in there.
