Coincidentally this is occurring in an election year.
And folks are wondering why essentially secret federal police are detaining citizens (against the wishes of the city and state government).
This is basically Trump's 3rd attempt at having his own private militia. First Trump called on right wing militia types to intimidate state govt's into reopening ( way too soon). Then he planned to have the military patrol Washington DC, until the military pushed back hard and said that wasn't how things work in the USofA. And now border agents and homeland security troops are operating in Portland against the wishes of the local and state gov't. And now Trump plans to expand such secret police operations to Chicago.
It isn't too hard to see the fascist impulse behind all of this. Especially in a an election year with a hugely unpopular president who says he's not sure he'll respect the election results. Trump could still rally the armed white nationalist militia folks for some nefarious purpose. Possibly combined with the homeland security/border guards. It doesn't take too much imagination to see this all go real sour and threaten democracy. Fortunately the genuine military wasn't up for such Trump shenanigans and seem like a bulwark against any possible takeover. But do we want to/can we really rely on the military.
Yeah, it's not likely Trump stages some armed takeover. Though it's not hard to posit some disputed election scenario where he refuses to leave. (and armed supporters would come in handy then). But if you don't see the Trump threat then you aren't really paying attention.
